Older i3 mk2 that didn't receive official upgrade, can I upgrade to 2.5 firmware?

I have an i3 mk2 that I purchased new from Prusa a couple of years ago.   I had actually ordered the 2.5 upgrade kit, but that was when they were taking forever to get and I ultimately cancelled it since I had done most of the upgrades separately anyway.

Going through what the changes are from a mk2 to a mk2.5, it seems like very few of them have anything to do with the firmware.  Just the SuperPINDA and filament runout sensor from what I can tell.   ???    And truthfully the original PINDA isn't the greatest and if I could move to something better that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world anyway.

So .....  is there anything preventing me from making this upgrade?   I do have the 1.3a rambo board.    Thanks.

Hi, there are a few differences between the Mk2 and Mk2.5. I've upgraded mine as well and documented the steps at  https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3062641 . The main differences are: 1. Heatbreak fan rpm cable, 2. PindaV2, 3. filament sensor (IR) and 4. the steel sheet. The Mk2.5S has a SuperPinda and a physical filament sensor instead.

At the time I had to downgrade the PINDA code into an older firmware which works fine ( https://github.com/baloan/Prusa-Firmware ). Now I am just about to recompile the Mk3 3.9.3 firmware to support my upgraded Mk2S with PindaV2. Comparing the configuration files I decided only to disable the STEEL_SHEET and SUPERPINDA_SUPPORT compile flags for a first try.

Have you been successful?

//#define IR_SENSOR

@andreas-balogh

Thanks for the reply.

Not exactly there yet.   I originally posted this around 3 weeks ago but you're the first one to reply.   A couple of weeks ago I decided to install the 3.9.3 firmware but after I did that it became apparent that my bed and pinda were going to need to be upgraded.   Since going through all didn't really buy me much I decided (for better or worse) to install a BBT Bigtreetouch mini V2.0 board so I could get BLTouch support, linear advance, and a quieter printer.  Got all my parts printed but still working on getting things assembled.   Here's the printer with the BTT TFT35 display mounted though.   That actually took a bit to figure out since there's hardly any room there and the board mounts differently than the old prusa one.   Not saving much money (to say the least), but I thought it would be an interesting project plus potentially give me something pretty good in the end.

@alanerickson

the Mk52 12 volt heatbed, has different sense points to the Mk42 heatbed and the 24 volt Mk52 heatbed,
However, if you are not using the Pinda, this will not be an issue

Thanks.   Was able to get it all sorted out and it's running good.
