Nozzle dragging across infill and hitting print

Hello again folks! ...

I'm back with another issue with my MK2s. This time it's a problem with the nozzle dragging across infill and finally hitting the printed part.

I've checked and adjusted the Z height, probe height, live Z value, extrusion multiplier, all the parts of the extruded (nozzle, heatbreak, ptfe tube). I've re-flashed the firmware, re-calibrate XYZ and the first layer.

The first layers are perfect, but slowly the nozzle start to drag across the infill, when the print head reach a certain height and the nozzle is too close to the print, the extruder start to click and skip and the print is ruined.

On the slicers side of things, I've tried all the main slicers (Slic3r PE, Prusa Control, Cura, Simplify 3D) all with default settings and with my settings. No changes, the problem remains. 😥
I don't get it, I've tried to take the whole print-head apart and rebuild it... the problem remains.

To me, it looks like the steps are not concistent. But to be honnest, I'm struggling with this printer for months. From time to time I manage to get a print out of it but it is usualy a relatively flat model and I still have to babysit it!

I'm running out of ideas, can you help me out? 🙄

Can you upload a photo of your hotend installation? If the hotend is correctly installed then you may be losing steps due to a voltage problem.

I've put some pictures here: https://imgur.com/a/fgxU8

The distance between the probe and the nozzle is set with the little tool from Nerdville ( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1977997 ). And it's working very well... for the 5 or 10 first layers...

The fact that the error accumulates as the number of layers increases point to an error in the steps per mm setting for the z axis. Have you recently updated firmware or made any changes on the z axis?

Perhaps try reloading the latest firmware in case it has somehow become corrupted.

Yes, the firmware was flashed (twice) from two different downloads (to avoid any corrupted files) with the latest version (3.1.0)

Re: Nozzle dragging across infill and hitting print

So looking for a mechanical cause - oil the z-smooth rods and lead screws, test, slacken the trapezoidal nuts and refasten, test, watch from above as you run the z up and down, looking for excessive wobble of the lead screws. I hope this helps you find the cause.

Thanks for the help! I'll give a try this week and see if there's an improvement.

Re: Nozzle dragging across infill and hitting print

Hi, Did this solve the problem at all? I'm having a similar issue but only on the left side, first layer is fine, nice and uniform, no drag lines from the nozzle but the higher it goes the worse it gets. I thought it was a bed levelling issue so I have been tweaking that in the settings (left +10) but it is also showing up in the first layer, left side looks to be too far from the bed and after a number of layers the nozzle ends up dragging on the print.

I've had my prusa mk2s for over a year and run over 3km of filament through it so I wouldn't be surprised if something needs a little lubricating.

Also, what should I use for lubricant?

Re: Nozzle dragging across infill and hitting print

I did manage to solve my issue ...but I tried so many different things that I'm not 100% sure what was the problem in the end. 😕

My MK2/s was still under warranty so I got in touch with Prusa support. A couple of test cubes and disassembly / reassembly later, they sent me a new hotend and I ordered a new set of printed parts for the print head.

...and it worked!

(I did noticed that using gyroid infill works much better!)

Now for your problem, you can check the two trapezoid nuts screws and redo a overall hardware check (screws, nuts, etc.)... and a bit of grease/oil won't hurt.
