Issues with prints on Prusa i3

hello,
I am new to 3D Printing and I have the Prusa i3, only 1 extruder. So I have been test printing these hose connectors that have threads and such. Every time I print, no matter what heat setting I use, the initial trail of plastic doesn't stick to the board. Once it begins printing the object, it sticks, just not the first loop. I have adjusted the height of the bed and extruder to try to fix that. On top of that, there are all these weird stringy bits that form on parts that are skinny or on the edges, I can even pull some of it apart with my hands. I am using ABS plastic, I have tried Extruder Temps from 220 up to 250 and Hot Plate Temps from 80 to 105. I also changed the speed from 60mm/s to 50mm/s. I have no idea what I am doing wrong but it seems like no matter what I change, the outcome is always the same.
Anyone have any other suggestions on what I should try to adjust?
