Changing configuration file for filament load/unload?

As the title says, I need some advice on how to edit values in my config file. Below is why:

I have been tinkering around with using the M600 command for changing filaments mid-print. I have to say I am getting really frustrated with the ColorPrint applet on the website not performing as advertised and screwing up my gcode. I am addressing that by inserting the command manually.

Therein lies another frustration. I would like to increase both the retraction length during a filament unload cycle and the feed during a filament load cycle. When my MK2 has performed the M600 command, it's quite annoying, as the filament is still firmly seated in the extruder as my printer beeps at me. My only option is to "click to load filament", after which I load the existing filament back in, then manually pause the print and remove then reload the new filament. I can only unload filament at any time by firmly grasping it and pulling it out as I press unload filement on the printer. It works fine, but is useless for unattended filament removal. I was hoping increasing the retraction time might fix this, as well as making filament changes easier for less practiced students (I am a teacher).

Finally, I don't think I've EVER been able to look at the stuff coming out the nozzle after loading new filament and say "yes, the color is clear". I barely see a hint of the new color to be honest normally. I always have to run it at least once more, unless I just don't care about mixed colors in the print. So, at the potential cost of an extra centimeter of filament someday- can I just run some more through the first time?

Thanks,
Dave
