Can I turn off during a print?

This morning I started the vase test print (5 hours) and went to work. 4 hours in my 7 year old son called me up and said the filament was no longer feeding into the extruder so I told him to turn it off.

I know it says in the manual not to let the printer stay heated up with out printing for too long, but it occurs to be that it might have been a bad thing to just flip the psu switch, as all the fans stop.

Was that ok to do?

Errr. No; wrong.

Best to just press the reset button and wait for the extruder fan to stop and then turn off.

You may have blocked the extruder.

Doh! peter beat me to it!

🙂

Turning off is not a good idea.
assuming that you are printing from SD Card,
it would have been better to press the "X" Reset button

on the LCD front panel,
this would stop the print,
and allow the printer to cool down

once cool, the printer can safely be turned off.

If you are using Pronterface, this will cause Pronterface to try restarting the print...

so you would need to open the pronterface window, and choose the OFF option...

again let the printer cool off before switching off.

Not sure how to turn off using octoprint...

you know the printer has cooled down because the extruder fan will switch off...

Wow, can I possibly screw up anything else in the 24 hours I finished building this thing.

So is blocking the extruder the worse case scenario? How do you fix it? Also, the whole reason I killed the power (or had my son do it) was because the filament was pulled out of the extruder. I assume it got tangled. Could it still be blocked?

Before you start down that path, find out first if there are any issues.

If the filament became tangled, then you should take more care of it when handling. Never let go of the loose end. When in storage ensure that the loose end is pulled well through one of the small holes in the outer rim of the spool.

I got lucky. The hobble nut drifted off center and stopped pulling the filament. It eventually slipped out. No clogged anything. I think it may have had trouble extruding in the middle for a few layers too:

Those might be under extrusion issues?
