Hi guys,
Another important update for this week! Josef released MK2S an updated version of MK2 😉

As always recap from me:
MK2 is already one year old however, the current version shipped to you today is different from the initial release. There are countless printed parts updates and major improvements in printer’s firmware (10 versions so far).
Devs are working daily on all these updates and thanks to Prusa’s printing farms, where printers are working 24/7 in very hot environment, they have collected a lot of testing data including typical failures.
Improving printed parts and software wasn’t enough so the team improved some other parts as well, all those will be included on new printers and sold in an upgrade package to MK2 owners for about $50:
1) Better LM8UU mounting on Y axis
Using zip ties to hold bearings and Y carriage together resulted in wobbling of the whole bed. Print quality is affected just slightly, but the devs decided to change the mounting system and introduce U bolts to replace the zip ties. The “re-assembly” of the Y carriage is from my experience easy and the whole carriage with bed is acting like one solid block.
2) Better LM8UUs and smooth rods
Even though MK2 is quiet printer, there is always room for improvements. Upgraded MK2S is using better LM8UUs bearings combined with new version of smooth rods from hardened stainless steel. This enables very fluid movements and also decreases the noise. Some pre-assembled MK2 are already equipped with these parts, so check twice before you purchase the upgrade 😉
3) Better P.I.N.D.A. probe mount
Current version of the probe mount is replaced by new version, which is much stronger in case of impact with printed object and also way easier for initial setup and calibration. The assembly manual is already updated, look for Chapter 5. Extruder and Chapter 9. Preflight check.Updated probe mount will be distributed in form of a g-code, get your ABS spools ready and as soon as there is link, I will update this thread.
Chapter 5: http://manual.prusa3d.com/Guide/5.+Extruder+Assembly/295#s4993
Chapter 9: http://manual.prusa3d.com/Guide/9.+Preflight+check/302#s5155
4) Improved cable stress relief on extruder
Proper cable management is crucial to prevent many failures including broken wires. The most loaded part is behind the extruder, where in case of improper assembly can develop a “hinge” and overtime, while extruder moving across X-axis some cables can get wear down and broke. MK2S is stiffened in this spot by screw and special printed part, which apart from stiffening also raises the whole harness up in the air, so it is not touching the heatbed anymore.
5) Better electronics cover
Rambo (electronics) cover was the most commented part of the printer assembly. Therefore the whole mounting system was revised and believe me, the assembly is way easier now.
This is all for now, happy printing!
Update: New parts can be downloaded from our GitHub https://github.com/prusa3d/Original-Prusa-i3/tree/MK2S/Printed-Parts
(To avoid issues with downloading, I suggest you to download the whole package)
Update 2: Josef just released .gcodes with printable parts tweaked by our printing expert, heat up your printers! http://www.prusa3d.com/downloads/others/mk2s_upgrade_gcodes.zip
Update 3: Upgrade kit to MK2S is on the eshop, first batch leaves on 3rd of April! http://shop.prusa3d.com/en/printer-upgrades/143-original-prusa-i3-mk2-to-mk2s-upgrade.html
Update 4: Official manual to help you step by step with upgrade from MK2 to MK2S is out, more here: http://prusa3d.dozuki.com/c/EN_upgrade
Update 5: There are questions regarding printed parts for MK2S upgrade, so let's clear this out 😉 To make your upgrade easier, we prepared G-code file including new X-carriage (holding Extruder), Extruder body and Y-motor-distance (optional). Other parts of the printer changed as well, but the changes aren't so important for you to print them as well.

Hi,
Are the new parts already shipped within the kits?
I am awaiting my kit in about 2 weeks. 😀

Re: ORIGINAL PRUSA I3 MK2S RELEASE
I am also waiting for my backordered printer to ship. It says my bracket will start printing on the 20th. I would like to know the time frame on the improvements being shipped. I would gladly wait an extra week if it meant I would be able to get the new parts.
Please let me know if this is doable.
Re: ORIGINAL PRUSA I3 MK2S RELEASE
Support told me my order from the 24th of January already included the new updgrades ❓
It appears to be quite progressive
Re: ORIGINAL PRUSA I3 MK2S RELEASE
Wow, how did you know that I just yesterday wanted to redo my cable ties in the bed, because they were a bit loose?
Ended up not doing anything, because I wanted to use bigger ones, but forgot that the holes are not big enough for that.
Now I can just wait and use the metal brackets 🙂
Re: ORIGINAL PRUSA I3 MK2S RELEASE
I like the fact that an upgrade kit will be available for about $50 (£45?) but I have a couple of questions about it... It says that it will include the gcode files for the printed parts? Does that mean that they are not physically included in the upgrade kit? I'm sure many of us don't have enclosures and can't print ABS or other high heat filaments, which will be needed for the new extruder housing. Does it include the new E3D-v6 (with higher wattage heater, silicone socks, socketed wiring and cartridge thermistor / heater? Many of us who bought the MK1 to MK2 upgrade kit got the older version...
Re: ORIGINAL PRUSA I3 MK2S RELEASE
The Mk2S kits started shipping Thursday/Friday last week, whilst pre-built Mk2S have been shipping a bit longer.
So, all kits now shipping should be the upgraded version.
Unfortunately, I don't have any details regarding the printed parts in the Mk2 to Mk2S upgrade kit, but I won't be bothering with that - my Mk2 doesn't suffer from issues requiring that upgrade.

Re: ORIGINAL PRUSA I3 MK2S RELEASE
Hi 3Delight,
from what I know the upgrade package should include only non-printable parts (bearings, rods, u-bolts, nuts and screw). For the printable parts, Josef will provide .gcode.
I will let you know, when it is officially listed on the eshop 😉

Thanks for the info Peter, Jakub...
While I'm not having any problems, I like to keep 'current' so will get the kit, plus a new E3D-v6...

Ragarding the ABS parts, there are not so big, so with some cautious (avoid draft, using some cardbox should be enough), you can print them without an enclosure.
For the E3D v6.1, I just had to upgrade my first printer while breaking the heatbreak during dismantle (call me hulk) and there is a kit from E3D with just the hotend and the new cartdrige thermistor, with a set of 3 blue socket for 15£, being in UK I presume the delivery cost will be very cheap.
PR should really have another delivery option, for small order, delivery cost is really over priced !

Re: ORIGINAL PRUSA I3 MK2S RELEASE
Jakob, and all PR team, this way to continuoulsy improve the MK2 is awesome, way to go !
I'm still curious about Josef tweeting about something new regarding beds ... What is he preparing 🙂

Re: ORIGINAL PRUSA I3 MK2S RELEASE
All the credits go to Josef and the devs, they are working day and night to bring new features. As for me, I'm just trying to inform you guys 😉
I can't comment on new features, but as you can see Josef is always trying to be ahead 😎
P.s.: I also think the ABS should be ok to print at home, most of them are relatively small and I've seen a colleague printing them without enclosure in normal room temperature.

While you're here, do you think one day we'll have another delivery option that the fixed price UPS ? This is really an issue when you want to make a small order.

Re: ORIGINAL PRUSA I3 MK2S RELEASE
I will try to ask next week about shipping and let you know, however let's keep this thread to MK2S questions only 😉

Re: ORIGINAL PRUSA I3 MK2S RELEASE
Thanks for the advice on the ABS...
I'm also thinking of going down the Ikea LACK table enclosure route but need to work out if it will still be practical after the Multi-Material Upgrade comes out... ❓
Re: ORIGINAL PRUSA I3 MK2S RELEASE
Pretty nice!
Will the Mk2S be open source as well? I'd really like to print the new extruder mount with better Pinda holder.
