Newbie Questions

Hey ya'll I have a few questions I can't seen to find definitive answers for.

1) What is the maximum retraction distance for the stock MK2S to avoid heat creep?

2) When a roll of filament has only one temperature on it what is a safe deviation? 10 degrees +/- ? 15 degrees +/-?

Thanks,

Neal

Re: Newbie Questions

Hi Neal.
The most likely reason that tou can't find answers. Is because 3D printing is mire of an art form than a science.

Maximum retraction distance is affected by : filament type.
Extrusion temperature
Ambient temperature
Humidity
Layer height
Model complexity (hi detial causes more retractions) more retractions cause more heat transfer gack into the heatbreak.
Print speed
There is little benefit for excessive retractions.
Ideally use the shortest satisfactory retraction. Reducing temperature and increasing retraction speed may be better changes to combat stringing

Again. Max safe temperature variation is affected by lots of factors

My know it all friend printed the gear bearing using PLA at ABS TEMPERATURES
It wasn't pretty
But it completed and worked.
Try a temperature tower to test the range on your printer

Re: Newbie Questions

Thanks Joan. And the idea of "more art than science" pretty much sums it up. But from a science stand point there has to be a limit on retraction. I guess what I need to know is how much an MK2S hotend can take on retraction before it starts becoming a clogging issue. I know Bowden setups can handle more retraction because of play in the tube and you have to play it as it goes. But a direct drive should be limited on the amount due to the cooling fins.

Back to the calibration prints.

Thanks Grapes and Bananas,

Neal
