i3 MK2 Assembling Questions

I recently purchased a partial 3D printer build from someone on Facebook. Keep in mind I am new to 3D printing, but am a very hands on person, so thought it would be fun.

Anyways, I picked up this printer for $150 and it seems to be 80-90% complete. I've quickly browsed over the assembly manual for this unit, i3 MK2. It looks like I'm missing a few pieces, filament spool holder for one. It looks like the guy I purchased this from was printing the pieces himself, problem is I don't have a printer to print the missing pieces.

This might be a long shot, but can anyone give me some direction on how I can obtain the missing pieces to finish this build? And maybe point out anything that I should be aware of after viewing pictures of what I'm working with.

Below is a link to pics I've uploaded to my G-Drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

RE: i3 MK2 Assembling Questions

Hi Chip,
this appears to be a modified "ZARIBO" version of the Prusa i3, it seems to have some mk2 parts and some mk3 parts... which could raise problems,

the  printer seems to have an Einsy Controller and a Mk42 heatbed...  Pleas check that this is an einsy controller

Typically the Einsy comes with the Mk3 printer (Normally 24 volt), but the Mk42 heatbed comes with a Mk2 printer (Normally 12 volt)

You also seem to have a Noctua Fan, in the left of the extruder assembly, this normally comes with a Mk3. and is normally 5 volt.

I think that you need to identify what power supply you have? is it 12 volt or 24 volt?

also you need to know which heater you have in the extruder  If it is a 12 volt heater and your power supply is 24 volts, the heater will try and draw 160Watts instead of the expected 40 watts

more details  https://zaribo.com/28-3d-printers

does the printer have a filament sensor?  if so, does it have 4 pins or 3 pins? (I suspect 4 pins) it looks like the filament sensor board would be vertical alongside the filament path, suggesting that the extruder is a mk3 extruder.
Does the printer have a Pinda probe,  if so, does it have 3 wires or 4 wires? 3 wires = Mk2 printer, 4 wires  = mk3 Printer

the Y axis motor is on the power supply side of the Y belt, this is correct for a Mk2 setup but incorrect for a mk3 setup, however... if you choose to use Mk3 firmware, on an einsy controller, you could remove the connecters from the plug body and re insert then in the reverse order... (this will reverse the stepper motor direction!!!  (I have done this on My Frankenprusa)

and the Y axis motor mount has  a  microswitch with black and white wires.  this microswitch is needed for Mk2 (Mini Rambo controller) not required for Mk3 (which uses 'Virtual' endstops) (crashes the X and y carriages into the ends of the travel...) crude but effective...  🙂

you appear to be missing an extruder part fan shroud...

your X, Y and  Z axis Smooth rods, appear to be Black, this means that they are probably anodised aluminium. and the blue linear bearings, are probably 'Igus' polymer bearings...  these are supposed to be self lubricating bearings...    I have never used this combination...  some folk swear by these bearings, others curse them...    I would keep them and try them,  until you see how they work for you!

the picture of four items on a beech table top, which appear to be

1,  3mm nylon wiring loom support filament, (Black )

2, 2 blue hot end socks, (these are the good ones, with the large  hole for the nozzle.  (the Pro, version with the small hole for the nozzle tip, ) was not very good,

3, the black cable probably says on the label, that it is a Noctua fan lead extension lead..

I hope this information is helpful,

regards Joan

Correct, Rambo 1.1a board

Typically the Einsy comes with the Mk3 printer (Normally 24 volt), but the Mk42 heatbed comes with a Mk2 printer (Normally 12 volt)

Correct, Noctuna fan, but it says 12v

I think that you need to identify what power supply you have? is it 12 volt or 24 volt?

Still need to read up on how to disassemble the PSU to see what kind of power it is producing.

also you need to know which heater you have in the extruder  If it is a 12 volt heater and your power supply is 24 volts, the heater will try and draw 160Watts instead of the expected 40 watts

I'll review your link and report back

I couldn't find a sensor, but that doesn't mean there isn't one. Still trying to figure out how to disassemble

Does the printer have a Pinda probe,  if so, does it have 3 wires or 4 wires? 3 wires = Mk2 printer, 4 wires  = mk3 Printer

I followed the wire back, not plugged in, and it looks to have 3, see add'l pics

the Y axis motor is on the power supply side of the Y belt, this is correct for a Mk2 setup but incorrect for a mk3 setup, however... if you choose to use Mk3 firmware, on an einsy controller, you could remove the connecters from the plug body and re insert then in the reverse order... Thanks again Joan. I tried to answer some of the questions, see above answers. Also, I've added some photos to the G-Drive that might help better explain. Thanks for all your help.

RE: i3 MK2 Assembling Questions

@csteinke-junkmail

Looks line you have a Mk2 sourced Zaribo

the guys at Zaribo will be able to advise you what you need to do to complete the printer...     I think you are nearly there

good luck,

you might wish to consider a Mk2.5S upgrade which would provide a Mk52 heatbed and removeable build plate  I like the removeable build plate a lot...

regards Joan
