XYZ calibration failing after cleaning

Hi, I bought my MK2.5 from my brother so he could upgrade last August. I've used the printer since August without issue.  I started having issues with prints while printing a lot of stuff for Christmas. Two weeks ago, I unloaded the filament, took out the nozzle, and did some maintenance over the system.  I put Super Lube on the x,y, and z rods. Blew out dust and such from the fans and extruder, cleaned the bed, and vacuumed up the little bits of plastic collecting under the machine. I then left it like that while out of town for the next week. This weekend, I turned it back on and loaded filament and a nozzle and it failed to do the 9 point calibration before the print. It stopped on the second point. I've tried everything I can find here and elsewhere to fix the XYZ calibration.

Summary of what I've done.

-Double and quintuple checked the wiring for motors and end-stops

-Adjusted the height of the PINDA probe.

-Factory reset

-rolled back firmware (multiple)

-reflashed current firmware

Occasionally, I'd get an issue with the x-axis pulley, so I've double-checked that as well.

I barely lifted it to get the plastic strands under it so nothing seems to be wrong on the bottom.  I'm at a loss.

When I run the XYZ calibration it stops while trying to find the 2nd (front right corner) point.  I don't know what's normal but when it starts the 2nd point, the z raises a bit and then it's just moving around there until it fails.

Attached are images of my nozzle and PINDA, where it stops in the XYZ calibration, what it looks like when Z axis at the top before the calibration, and the code from Pronterface which is gibberish to me but hopefully will provide a clue.  Thanks in advance.

RE: XYZ calibration failing after cleaning

Did you ever get his resolved? Something very similar has just happened to me. I've had my printer since early MK2 days, subsequently upgraded to MK2.5 and to MK2s & MMU2 a few months ago. I decided to do XYZ calibration on a whim, and it failed. It goes through the whole process but displays a fail message at the end. Not info except check the manual. The Pinda triggers when I put a metal object underneath it. At a loss...

I see you’ve already adjusted your Pinda probe height and done a factory reset (cleared out all saved values presumably). I have seen inconsistent Pinda probe readings behave like this. If you can confirm that your live Z value is roughly between -1.0 and -0.3 then you might consider that you have an intermittent Pinda probe failure given that you’ve had the printer for quite some time. I’m thinking maybe the cable has been flexed over time though how this might be is unclear. If you have another Pinda you can try it as a debug test.

Hi, I got ahold of the customer support line and after some more testing, it turns out there was a short in the cable to the pinda probe. I've replaced the probe and back to printing! We were able to see that there was a short because of the log when running the XYZ calibration.  It was triggering as though it was hitting metal even though it wasn't. All good now!

Thanks for the info.  I'd love to look at the log file as I'm completely baffled at the moment. Where can I find it / view it?

@djspathis

Yes, I reset the calibration values and my first layer calibration for a smooth sheet is -0.95. I was able to look at the console values during calibration by sending an M45 V99 command through Octoprint. From this, I can tell that the Pinda is finding the calibration points. After the last point, however, it stops for a couple of seconds and then just put out any other info on the console indicating what the problem is. Unfortunately, I don't have another Pinda right now - ordering a new one is probably my next step.

@paulin-l

Might want to try customer support to get a “more informed” opinion.

Resolved! I was one step away from contacting support but decided to do one final verification of xyz measurements and squareness using a micrometer and a machinist square. I found some slight errors <0.2mm, which I was able to bring within 0.05mm and was able to reduce the slight skew. Using Octoprint, I ran this sequence: G28 W, G1 Z15, M84, M45 V99. This time, the output on the 4th calibration point, which looked wierd compared to the other three points) went from this (first 16 rows of second calibration stage):

and the calibration process completed successfully.

It seems that after 120+ days of printing, the cumulative effects of vibration had shifted things far just far enough out of range. This despite all nuts and bolts being tight. I do wish that the xyz calibration process produced more information on what is failing, or if it does provide this, there was some documentation on how to access, as this would have been very helpful.

All good now and very happy to be printing again.
