Changing filament
Hey everyone,
Im having an issue sometimes while Im changing the filament. If for some reason I could not get the filament thru the extruder correctly so the stepper did not feed it and I had to pull it out and try again until it passes through the extruder,(2-3 times maximum) then when I finish the operation the printer interprets that the filament has runed out and moves all the way to the right together with the bed(Like when you are in the middle of a print and the filament runs out).
Has it happened to someone else?
This is not a problem if I previously did de 9 points calibration but if I did not then the extruder does not know where to stop so it hits the structure. It occurs to me that may be this action should be excecuted to the left so the extruder can encounter the endstop or may be change it so that if the machine has not excecuted the 9 points calibration yet then wont move the extruder.
I have the Mk2.5 printer with the 3.5.1 firmware.
Regards
Re: Changing filament
Hi Eduardo,
how do you do a filament change?
if not printing, I heat the extruder, say PLA settings
when temperature stabilises, I choose, 'Unload Filament'
wait for the printer to unload the filament, then when it bleeps, i pull the end out of the extruder
then I change filament spools
then if autoload is enabled I cut the end of the new filament at an angle, and insert it into the top of the extruder, where it is detected and fed into the extruder, squirting a small ammount out of the nozzle before checking for you to confirm it is loaded
if autoload is not enabled, I insert the end of the filament into the extruder and choose load filament,
the filament loads squirts out a small amount and asks if the filament is loaded
if mid print, I select the change filament option, the printer moves the bed to the back and the extruder to the right
it then ejects the filament and bleeps...
I pull the old filament out, change rolls, snip the new filament at an angle,
insert the end of the filament on the roll, into the extruder and press the lcd control knob until the filament is fed in, and a small waste pile is extruded.
I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

I grab the waste with my long nosed pliers and HOLD it still.
when the display asks if the filament is clear, I click yes, and the extruder squirtsa little more filament out, then continues with the print. leaving all of the waste, caught in your pliers.

Re: Changing filament
Hi Joan,
Sorry I didn´t see the notification of your response. I follow the steps that you mention in deed, the problem I noticed was when you can´t feed the extruder with the filament because is curved someway(usually this is present in the last metters of the spool) so if you can not pass filament through the gears but it passes through the filament sensor(that detects it) you have to pull it off and after the printer finish the autoload command then it moves all the way to the right like when you are in the middle of a print and the filament runs out but if you didnt do a mesh bed leveling before that(as when you just turn on the printer) the extruder crash with the right side of the frame.
This only happened to me three times but I thought that was worth to mention.

Re: Changing filament
I think this is unfortunate interraction between feed errors and the filament sensor.
as you note, the last few metres of filament sometimes have a very tight curve...
I try to straighten the end of the filament, before inserting it, to try and prevent this issue.
