Direct upgrade from MK2 to MK2.5

Hello,

I just received my upgrade kit but I don't have the MK2 to MK2S upgrade kit.

I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade directly from MK2 to MK2.5 without the MK2S kit.
I had a quick look at both upgrade manuals, but it was not clear which steps require to do the MK2 to MK2S step first.

If the MK2 to MK2S is mandatory, I will order it and wait for it before beginning the upgrade.

Best regards,

Joel.

Hi Joel,

I can't think why Mk2s would be necessary,

I plan to go straight Mk2 to Mk2.5,

however you will probably complete before me, because I am currently using the new flexible steel build plate on my Mk2mmu, and can't buy a replacement yet, so the mk2.5 upgrade is on hold!

regards Joan

Re: Direct upgrade from MK2 to MK2.5

I recently did the upgrade from MK2 to MK2.5 but I DID get the mk2S upgrade. I am not entirely sure if it is required as the only parts that change are the smooth rods, U-Bolts and possibly bearings (I cant remember which kit they came with). None of these seem essential for Mk2.5 but if they are an improvement, I wanted to have them.

Thanks for the replies.

I will also have to wait a couples of days before printing the required parts to do the upgrade because my printer is quite busy now.

I tkink I will first carefully compare the stl files from MK2 / MK2S / MK2.5 versions to see if it seems possible to apply the MK2 to MK2.5 directly without having the MK2 to MK2S kit.

Regards,

Joel.

As far as printed parts go, there is only one part that is required from the MK2S upgrade and that is Y-distance.stl which sits behind the Y motor. All other printed parts are from the MK2.5 upgrade.

Have a look at the guide I wrote: https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/assembly-and-first-prints-troubleshooting-f41/mk2-to-mk2-5-upgrade-guide-t18998.html

Looking closely at x-carriage stl from MK2 and MK2S version, it seems that there may be a difference in the diameter of the bearings used in the MK2 and the MK2S version ...

Apart from from the printed parts, the MK2 to MK2S brought:
1) improved durability and precision of smooth rods/bearings
2) u-bolts for the Y-carriage (replacing zip-ties)

I strongly suggest getting both 😉

Re: Direct upgrade from MK2 to MK2.5

I finally found the time to upgrade my printer to 2.5.
In the meanwhile, I ordered the MK2 to MK2S upgrate kit as well so I applied both upgrades at the same time as described by BM007.

The assembly went without any problem.

From my feeling, it would have been possible to apply directly the MK2S to MK2.5 upgrade but now that I have them I agree with jakub.d that the new bearings and the U-Bolts are good improvement.

So far, I'm really satisfied with the print quality of my MK2.5 and I found it significantly quieter which is a really good point.
