XL will not boot after firmware update to 5.1.2

I assembled my printer and before the first print I updated the firmware from the USB-Stick 4.72, than connect to the network, put latest firmware to the stick (eject the drive carefully), insert Stick and say yes to the question if I like to do a firmware update. I wait approx. 1 hour, but the progress do not complete.

Now the printer do nothing. Progress bar ist in the middle and in the lower left corner it say v2.0.8.

Waht can I do to bring him alive?

Thank you.

Sascha

RE: XL will not boot after firmware update to 5.1.2

I am also stuck trying to get the firmware updated.

I have 2.0.8 (bootloader) and 4.7.2 - I have tried:

 - four different USB disks 2gb, 4gb, 8gb and 32gb disks

- formatted to FAT, FAT32 (2k blocks) FAT 32 (4k blocks)

- used two different computers to format/copy the files

- I loaded several versions of the firmware - 4.7.5, 5.1.0, 5.1.2 onto the USB disk

- I tried renaming the file from the downloaded name to "firmware.bbf" , "xl_firmware_x.x.x.bbf"

It has *never* actually found the .bbf file after hitting the reset button.

I pressed the knob after hitting reset and got it always says either it couldn't find a BBF file, or when it does find a file, it complains that "Firmware file has invalid size! Check the file on the USB and try again" (#xx603).

I tried doing a factory reset, and it wipes everything, and then does a reset and now it's stuck on "Looking for BBF" ... if I press the knob a couple times after hitting reset, I'm back to "Firmware file has invalid size! Check the file on the USB and try again"

I'm now completely stuck at the "looking for BBF" and can't do anything.

The problem for me is, that the printer is dead. I can not boot anymore. I did this

https://help.prusa3d.com/de/article/fw-in-internal-flash-corrupted-17608-xl_399864

Pressing the knorb after reset, but I did not get any menu to reset my firmware.

While this screen is shown the extruder fan is running:

I had no problem, upgrading to the new firmware. Came from 5.1.0. Evereything went smooth as expected. Did you speak to Prusa Support. Please report the suggested solution from them. I am curious.

Cross my fingers, that your problem is solved quickly.

I had a chat this morning and after he understood that I did not get any menu or possible selection to update the firmware again, he forwarded the case to the dev department. Maybe something dead. The XL was just finished and the first HW check was done. approx. 30min power on. Before printing something I liked to be uptodate with the firmware...Now I cannot continue anything. Let´s see.

RE: XL will not boot after firmware update to 5.1.2

I started the firmware update with Prusa Connect. The file was successfully transferred to the XL. Did a reboot and got the finally the message BBF file not found.

Removed the USB drive, which had the correct BBF file in the root directory. Deleted this file and uploaded it again on the PC. Did a reboot on the XL and the firmware installed correct. Just finished an IS print job successfully.

At the moment I am not able to upload any IS sliced gcode via Prusa Connect. Not via the Prusa Slicer 2.7.1 and also not via the web interface of Prusa Connect. Get the code 403 access forbidden. The gcode file is not corrupted and the print settings seem to be correct. If I transfer the gcode file with a USB drive everything works.

I will try to setup an other installation of Prusa Slicer on an other PC and see what happens.

RE: XL will not boot after firmware update to 5.1.2

I just exported a new project. Started PrusaSlicer, updated the configuration (note came with starting the slicer (Vers. 2.7.1), logged in to PrusaConnect, uploaded the exported file without any problems (.bgcode). The transfer to my printer went without any issues, so ready to print.

I suggest to check wether you can print a small existing file via PrusaConnect which is already on the USB-Stick.

Hi,

as I wrote my printer is not booting anymore. So I even do not have a menu. Noting works.

Anyway, if it is repaired your suggestions maybe helpful. Thank you.

Did your firmware update get interrupted while it was in progress?   Perhaps you have a partially written firmware.   You might have to reach out to support and see how you could recover from that, I'm honestly not sure.

RE: XL will not boot after firmware update to 5.1.2

My problem got solved by using a different USB drive (4gb, formatted fat32, 16k cluster size) putting the firmware on it, hitting reset, then pressing the knob a few times until it started reflashing.

RE: XL will not boot after firmware update to 5.1.2

I upgraded from 5.1.0 to 5.2.1, I thought everything was ok, I did not print, because I wanted to check why it asked for calibration.

Turned off the printer, and today I read that I only need to confirm nozzle diameter, so I turned it on, just to find that my printer hangs like the above one, progressbar goes to 50%, and it hangs there.

It says bootloader 2.3.4, and started to flash the printer again (my usb stick was in the printer, with the firmware), but after "flashing" it hangs.

I updated the printer from PrusaConnect if that have anything to do with it.

RE: XL will not boot after firmware update to 5.1.2

I assume you mean 5.1.2.    I did this yesterday and confirmed nozzle size(0.6 for me) and I've not had any issues.   Had you previously completed a full calibration, to include the fans?   I'm a little curious if maybe there is some different hardware floating around now.  I got my 5T fully assembled XL on Nov 6.   But with the latest firmware release notes it sounds like there have been some hardware changes that they've had to make changes for.   I would definitely reach out to prusa support.

yes, 5.1.2 ;), strangely I cannot edit my post

Yes, I have fully calibrated the printer, and been printing for some time (I got mine 2. oct).

This is the 5T version, didn't see that I was in the wrong forum, but i guess issues are the same.

RE: XL will not boot after firmware update to 5.1.2

Somehow the option to enable binary Gcode has disappeared in PS 2.7.1

The option for binary Gcode is gone. Same result with the new install. For some reasons the binary Gcode option is still in the config files from 2.7.0
With 2.7.0 I had not input shaper settings installed. The old settings still work. With the new both setups (with IS and without) work. But I am not able to
enable the binary Gcode settings. I also find out, that there seems to be a new general preferences setting "Use binary G-code if printer firmware supports it".

Very strange...

RE: XL will not boot after firmware update to 5.1.2

well, since you and sushi are having the same issue, it doesn't seem isolated.  I got mine originally with 4.7.2, went to 5.0.0 then 5.1.0 alpha and then final and finally the 5.1.2 yesterday.  They've all gone off without a hitch.   The first thing I did though when I got the printer was use a sandisk usb fob instead of the one that came with it.   I guess I read that folks were having those fail really soon after getting the printer.   Do you keep your printer on a UPS?   I'm curious if you had power issues during your flash.   I mean it's probably unlikely since the flash happens so quickly, but it is a pretty vulnerable time though.

Interesting, it's still under the printer preset though, and when I send to the printer it's a .bgcode file

RE: XL will not boot after firmware update to 5.1.2

I can report, that with this information from the support I was able to use this printer again. Meaning it is booting after updating the firmware to 5.1.2:

1/ Format the USB drive FAT32 format type

2/ Download the latest firmware 5.1.2 again

https://help.prusa3d.com/downloads

3/ Move the firmware to the USB drive

4/ Reboot the printer and try to force the flash of the firmware pressing the knob for 4-5 seconds

I guess my mistake was to pressing the knob to long/short.

RE: XL will not boot after firmware update to 5.1.2

Read the release docs, it's explained there, and it is an better place for it now.
https://github.com/prusa3d/PrusaSlicer/releases/tag/version_2.7.1

and lets get back to firmware problems, not slicer issues..

RE: XL will not boot after firmware update to 5.1.2

Replaced all my usb sticks with Sandisk ultra fit, those that came with the printers are total cr..

Not running on ups, and the printer was operable after, I just didn't print on it, it was sitting idling some hours, before I turned it off.

Uninstall the XL presets and installing them again has solved my problems.
