RE: XL - Wish List

This kind of reminds me of what a (late - mhrip) boss of mine would say when we were presented with a challenging issue, along the line of Don't tell me why you can't do it, tell me how you're going to do it.

3d printing in metal ('direct metal') does exist and is practical, under certain circumstances.

It can be done and is being done.

There would be challenges in the formulation of an alloy which had the melting temperature and other properties which would make it practical to lay down on a plastic substrate.

There would also be challenges in the technique to deposit (using the term 'deposit' rather than 'extrude' since the common extrusion methods may not apply) the alloy under controlled conditions.

It may require some significant (to use the buzzword-compliant term) out of the box thinking and will definitely require a very significant investment in hardware, software and wetware development.

My only wish is any firmware but Marlin.  First choice is RRF which is infinitely superior and open source.

I hate to burst your bubble, but there is limited chance it will not be based on Marlin considering both the Mini and MK3S are forks.

Thick film printing. I have been involved with it where they screen print potentiometers etc (fuel level sensing cards). It was laid out as a thick film (duh) then run through an oven. I do not know what the matrix/solvent was. For a 3D printer, you could use an inking head and then you would have to apply heat- wide beam (unfocused) diode laser head passing over it? UV curing head? Could be interesting, with a tool changer, using up 2 spaces would not be murder.

I'm surprised that it has not happened also.

Using a relatively low-temperature alloy as a 3d print medium could be a 'bridge' for Prusa between FDM plastic printing and true metal printing, plus it would have extremely low resistivity and it should permit, with care, of course, soldering of leads and such to the 3d printed traces.

I really don’t see a home based direct metal printer.  The safety requirements would make insurance for the manufacturer a real challenge.  The BASF metal filament seems to be the most likely path forward.  I really want to see PEKK level of high temp printing.

Here's some recent progress on 3D printed electronics. Far from the FDM world.

I want the option of using load cells (weight scales) in the filament holders.  Then integrate that into the farm software with the ability to message me or report the status of each spool.

RE: XL - Wish List

Load cell data would be complicated to integrate for filament weight estimates. Vibrations, rotation of the spool, friction, & pulling filament will all need to be accomodated, filtered, & averaged to get a weight estimate. I've worked on some engineering projects that included similar load-cell integration into closed-loop manufacturing process control. It's a tall order for something that can easily be done manually on machines that need to be manually tended for other things as well. Maybe eventually on machines that automate finished-part-removal, it might be worth it.

It would be a challenge, no doubt.  They're pretty smart over at Prusa though.  It would be a premium upgrade, that not everyone would want.  In a high-end print farm scenario, it would be vital.

I know they could; I just don't think it's a high enough priority yet.

At this price point, in the interest of quality & speed -  the XL's firmware will have to support input shaping and pressure advance such as with Klipper.

Is there a mode where the printhead can be moved out of the way for making time lapse photos of the build??

This is on my wish list.

You can do that now with a mini or MK3S and octoprint.

RE: XL - Wish List

So we are about half way through Q2, I hope that they start releasing more info soon, or at least more in-depth info on what they have released.  Some thoughts on how Prusaslicer might change or features that will be added.  I seem to be in line for all the stuff I want.  Actually in line for one of the Ineos Grenadiers SUVs, and they do a great job of dribbling out information every few weeks about this or that. Lots of topics that could take a 10 minute videos- why the new linear bearing, why the change to a Z moving build plate, why five extruder and not more or less, the mounting mechanism for the heads and what kind of repeatability that gives you.

Sure, some of these desired features are cool, but explaining the current ones would be cool too.

Uhhh we JUST started Q2, not half way through. We're only coming up on the 2nd week of it :).
I too hope for more information, but with deliveries expected in Q3 (which, in typical companies, means towards the end of the quarter, assuming it doesn't get pushed back), I wouldn't hold my breath for much until middle of May or so.

Hi there,

I wondered if anybody can propose a 3d printing service  with this printer.

I would like to have a huge model being printed in tpu, one of my model a 40cm wide one. I did that once with treastock. But it will be more than  nice to have it here as well!

Print srrvice for the community. Regards frog frog.

I tried being a supplier on Treatstock, but the rates barely cover the cost of filament (I use Prisament or other high-end filaments). I'll be using my XL to print & sell my own designs.
