RE: Xl extruder stops

They are not very keen on it. Getting stuff shipped out of Guatemala is an expensive proposition. Hopefully they are willing to do something soon. I'd be happy to try new boards and extruder motors.

Maybe offer up your machine to Prusa to help dispose the problem.  Have them send you a new machine and then send yours back in that box.

My XL has same problem.
It has 2 tools and 2 tools have same problem.
I spoke to live chat support 4 times.
I found that the extruder failure happens at the layer that is print fan switched on.
It seems when I turned off print fan the problem not happened.

They said they are already in the middle of figuring out how to fix this.

I disabled print fan on slicer. It seems running again well.

So it seems this is happening to others not on this forum. One guy has sent the printer back for repairs twice and it still does it. Also told no refunds! Another has replaced Sandwich board and extruder steppers, no fix. It's now 5 days since my last email and no reply. I may have to consider seeing if my credit card will do a charge back. What happened to the well supported products we once knew?

RE: Xl extruder stops

Hello everyone!

I'm still struggling with the extruder failure in my projects. I use the XL for private purposes, but it's still annoying to constantly check the printer to see if it's working properly. I've passed on my observations and experiences to my support. He announced this in a specially convened meeting with the firmware team (focus on extruder failure) last week.
My latest information from my Prusa Support is that the firmware team is working hard on the error. In the meantime, even XLs with the extruder error have been brought to the factory for investigation. Apparently the firmware team is already making progress. However and whatever that may mean.
As anyone can see on GitHub, 6.2.0 alpha2 is still released. There is no RC1 or RC2 or official 6.2.0 final firmware yet.
I don't want to sugarcoat this catastrophe, because I'm pretty pissed off too, but unfortunately we have to wait. Because when the XL works, it really does deliver very good results.

But.......I also understand everyone who would like to throw the XL at Prusa's head. Promised was a reliably functioning multi-tool printer.
We simply cannot solve the problem if it is hidden in the firmware.

RE: Xl extruder stops

A little update, so you guys have another piece of info - we recieved back our XL from Prusa with a claim that the issue is resolved. We basically got a new printing head with everything that goes with it. To make it short.. after 16 hours of printing the extruder stopped working again. So the next day we brought it to Prusa factory again. At this point it seems they are going to replace the whole printer for a completely new one as one of the technicians noted. Honestly, at this point I am not sure if we want the printer anymore and looking for an alternative.

... but this way they will have a printer exhibiting the issue to tear-down; take the filament you were printing with you when you swap just in case that's significant.

Cheerio,

Use 3mm ID PTFE tubing.

I had the same issue.

Good point.  I hadn't even thought of that, but I also run 3mm id tubing.  I changed it out when I built the printer because I was running filament directly from a drybox and wanted to reduce drag.

I also completely bypass the side sensor.  I just 3d printed a plug to stick in the sensors.

Can you try feeding your extruder directly from above with no ptfe tube to eliminate drag as a test? You can disable the side sensor in the settings.

Side sensors have been disabled for a while. Yes I can feed from overhead with no change in things. Still shuts down. have had 5 months of problems my patience is running out. Today it will not even boot up. Blue error screen. Support hasn't answered in a week now. Losing faith in Prusa.

RE: Xl extruder stops

As I had the same problem - we might have differnet problems with the same result:

In my case I had a case and must have used it once with the case closed. Some printer head plastic pieces are made out of PETG. However - they need to be made from PC-CF, because otherwise temperature and force will bend them. So do you have a case (non Prusa) and/or printed when it was really hot? If so, you might want to swap those pieces with the PC-CF variant. ( https://help.prusa3d.com/guide/4-nextruder-upgrade-multi-tool_690321)

Hello folks!

I finally have some good information from Prusa Support. The extruder failure problem has been fully identified. Firmware is currently being written and will then be tested internally for about a week. Once this is done there will be a firmware on GitHub.

My support keeps me up to date.

That would be awesome. That means our printer should be operational in no time as they have it there exactly for this reason. At least we will see, if the support gives us the same information. You know, for "word integrity check" reasons

I hope so too. I don't think every support guy is equally motivated or properly trained.

Let's just hope that the information I received is correct.

I keep my fingers crossed for you.

I don't want to exaggerate, of course, but this is the information I received. Hopefully it's correct and this annoying nightmare will be over.

Hi! same issue here, I've been silently following this thread since I had nothing productive to add, but now, with the local comiccon getting closer and closer I feel like I must ask. Did you get any updates on the firmware's ETA?
Its really been a struggle so far. I have a two toolhead printer and both of the extruders have the issue, so I am printer-less until it is resolved.

Hi mate, not sure if anyone has brought this up yet, but have you guys checked if your MCU board might be overheating? There are no vents or fans, and depending on where you place the XL, in a tight space it could get pretty hot and cause many issues. Might want to double-check your MCU temps.

The consensus is that it's a firmware issue.

I also have plenty space behind my machine but I'll try pulling it even further out and see if it works.

No harm in giving it a try! If I'm successful I'll report it by editing this comment. Otherwise, assume failure.

RE: Xl extruder stops

I have a 5 tool XL with enclosure. I also have experience this on toolhead 1 and toolhead 2. When it happens to me I stop the print and try to unload the filament and the extruder motor does not turn, then I try to load the filament and the same result. Next I park to tool and pick another one. When I do a load or unlock from the menu the extruder motor turns fine on the newly pick tool. Then if I pick the tool with the issue the extruder motor works just fine.  I then run the job again an everything works fine. So I know it is not the tool and it is not temp since I have this happen on an early layer, also the enclosure door is open and the printer is in a AC controlled room. The XL is over 6 months old and this has never happen before. To me the XL started having this issue with later versions of the firmware. The next time I have this happen I will park the tool and then pick it again to see if parking and picking the tool gets past this issue.  This has to be a firmware issue since it is so random when it happens and without a reboot or cooldown just parking and picking a different tool the issue goes away.
