Xl extruder stops

Ok, so I have a XL that I am running. Firmware is current everything is clean new nozzle filament is new, the printer will start printing put down one or two perfect layers. During the print the extruder just stops, the gear does not spin. I can open the filament latch and look at the gear and it is not moving, filament is not jammed or clogged. I can stop the print and go into move axis to manually move the E axis and it does not spin. I have to turn off the printer and then it will start spinning in manual or a normal print. I can sometimes make it through a long print but the quality is par at best. any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

  1. Either it is mechanical (extruder gears) or perhaps you can look into the cable connectors on the toolhead itself. Perhaps there is a loose contact.

Did you ever resolve this? I’m having the same issue.

I'm seeing the same issue, did you ever find a fix?

Are you using an enclosure? (could it be a temperature issue on the dwarf board?)

I've only had it happen on T1, but I'm mostly using T1. I swapped T1 and T3, and the issue still happened on dock 1

I spoke to live chat support, they suggested it might be an issue with the cable and/or the sandwich board. I'm most of the way through a long print with T3 and have not run into the issue yet. What tool(s) does it happen on for you?

RE: Xl extruder stops

The issue of the XL extruder stopping can be caused by various factors, including filament jams, temperature fluctuations, or mechanical failures. It's crucial to check for obstructions, ensure consistent filament feeding, and verify stable temperature settings. Regular maintenance and calibration can help prevent such interruptions.

It seems I am having the same problem. At first i seemed that tightening the grip of the filament helped, at least to some extent (before there was almost no grip and I could pull the filament out without any resistance). However it does not solve the issue. So far it seems that it is not a temperature problem or a filament issue. No jams, no clogging. I pull out the filament, reinsert it and it works fine for a while. After that, the printer is "printing", but no material is fed through. Any helpful advice would really be appreciated.

RE: Xl extruder stops

I've been working with Prusa support on this and I've started suspecting it's another symptom of the USB disconnect issue. Other possibilities are the sandwich board or an intermittent cable/connection (and I got lucky with it working recently)

I just installed the new 6.1.2 firmware that mentions fixes for unexpected USB disconnection, and I was able to complete a 40h nylon print (enclosure closed) with T1+T5 without running into this issue or a USB disconnect.

Hello !

Same problem here and is just on the T1....

MalikDrako, did this problem start after you installed firmware 6.0?

Are you still working fine with the new 6.1.2?

I swap TH1 to TH2 and the problem remains on T1....

I will try this new 6.1.2

I didn't use pre-6.0 much, but I don't recall getting this issue on it.

I still suspect this is a symptom of the USB disconnect issue. I ran a few shorter prints (1-3h) without clearing the flash drive (which seems to help reduce USB issues), the extruder stopped twice and I got a USB disconnect once. I then cleared the flash drive and successfully completed a 37h print

RE:

So, after 6.1.2 you still have the problem… that is not good.

I will try on Monday on a clean USB.

Will keep you posted.

RE: Xl extruder stops

I got this from support the other day, looks like the fix for the XL USB issue was not in 6.1.2

The USB disconnected fix was mainly for MK4 printer, we are working on big update towards this issue, which should be part of the following firmware release.

RE: Xl extruder stops

It might be a stupid comment - so please ignore if so:

I was running into a similar problem. I couldn't print PETG and luminous filaments on one head. Finally even normal PLA didn't work anymore and after 1-5 layers no extrusion happened anyhmore. Also - inserting was a problem. After weeks (months?) of head scratching someone finally asked me if I have an enclosure. Yes, I did, even though I really only close the top as I didn't print anything more serious than PETG yet.

So I was told that I should replace the PETG extruder pieces with PC-CF. Today I finally had time to do so and it appears (at least on the first print) that the inserting worked immediately and some test prints came out correct as well. Will next try to do a bigger test print to see if that also works.

So - if you used an enclosure and didn't upgrade your toolheads - that might be the problem.

I'm pretty sure I've replaced all loaded parts with PC-CF by now. At least for me, the extruder is acting like the motor turns off - if I open the extruder door while changing filament, I can see the gear is not spinning, and if I move the filament by hand the gear moves freely with it.

Support thinks it is heat issues on the dwarf board, but that doesn't explain why the issue on T1 stopped completely for weeks when I swapped head 1 and head 3, and started printing with T3. IIRC, around that time I also turned off PrusaLink and PrusaConnect, and started printing with only 1 file on the drive, which seems to greatly reduce the number of USB errors I get, that's why I suspect this issue is another symptom of USB errors

Pretty much the same problem on my end, im gonna take apart the head and be shure everything its plugged well. Temperatures can be a possibility, on my case especially now with the summer the area where is located can get hot sometimes.

Reminds me of the problems with mmu2 from the mk3. That one was stopping or giving errors randomly from a flaw in the power board design and wasn't getting always the proper voltages. Im also gonna test this design and see if it improves anything.Dwarf board cover

RE: Xl extruder stops

I just had this issue for the first time, this is the longest print I had done with ABS + Enclosure, I left the printer running over night and at some point the motor simply stopped working, no errors, no filament jams, I even tried to immediately unload/load filament and no response from extruder motor (the enclosure was very warm). I left alone it as I couldn't deal with it before work, I come back this evening and its all working as it should again... heat issue seems accurate so far, will see if it fails again.

On mine i printed and added the following parts to increase the airflow over the board "if really heat its the issue"Skeletton Dwarf Cover Back and Skeleton Dwarf Door

My printer is not enclosed but the room its in sometimes gets hot over 35c now with summer gone and those updates im gonna report if the problem still persists.

RE: Xl extruder stops

Update! All of the plastic parts around the dwarf board got skeletonized, it did somewhat improved but also the ambient temperature its lower.

Other thing i noticed, it has the tendency to stop pulling filament if the spools are to heavy or i set the printer on faster speeds 150%-200%.

It seems that struggling sometimes to pull filament can make it stop.

I put a small 1kg spool and let it on standard speed. So far it operates normally.

A 4.5 kg spool was constantly making it stop extruding.

RE: Xl extruder stops

I just installed 6.2.0 alpha to fix the USB issue. That appears to have been resolved with the alpha firmware.

Now I encountered this issue that appears on T1 while printing ASA. The extruder gear stops turning after 2-3 layers into the print. When I stop the print and try to purge filament, it also does not turn. After a reset the extruder gear is able to turn again and behaves as normal. I am printing in an enclosure. I hope this issue is resolved in the next update.
