It's a chat program, and you shouldn't necessarily care. It's not the thing for everybody. There are multiple "servers" you can connect to, and this one is run by Prusa [Edit: The link I had given is expired, sorry. I can't get a new one.]

Discord is similar to a forum.  It allows people to share and communicate.  I just use the forum.

I personally hate DIscord but i know its the buzz out there... ITs like the old "tool" named IRC, just revamped with vitamins.

It's a lot like the IRC channels of old, if you're familiar with those. Everything is an interactive discussion, with nothing persistent or saved. If you answer a question once, you can expect to be answering the same question again later in the day. There are other video and sharing features, but it's really a chat system with no "knowledge retention". I've tried Discord out a few times, and it really strikes me as IRC with annoying emojis and too many people talking at once.

What I said and my thoughts exactly.

I can't stand tech companies on relying support to those "channels" as an official method....

[...] I can't stand tech companies on relying support to those "channels" as an official method....

I tried hopping onto one of the Prusa unofficial discords before the official one started and was working through diagnosing a hotend problem with some guy when one of the long-timers interrupted and insisted that problems can't be heat related. I tried to help, but this "expert" started blathering about his miniature prints and wouldn't let us have a conversation. It's like trying to have a one-on-one conversation on a busy subway with a bunch of drunks. IMO, Discord is a waste of time.

RE: Prusa XL Order Tracking List

Hey folks, I'm super glad that you all prefer forums - and I'd like to call out that I'm not trying to persuade anyone to use one over the other.  I only mentioned it in passing, and provided the link when someone asked about it specifically. Each is a tool for a different job. I'd like to politely request that we not use terms like "There are less experts and more annoyances on discord" though please? It would be such a shame to diminish the capabilities of others because of our personal preference, right?

Prusa doesn't send people to discord for support. They have fantastic dedicated support channels and I am all for using those channels as directed. I am not, however, all for diminishing other people because I don't like something. That's not OK. I'm quite sure based on each of your vast posting history that you would not like to either, and that this was not intended - but let's use the right words to express our thoughts and feelings.

Thanks kindly for your consideration.

While not your intent, you did shove a pretty big wedge in by duplicating the effort (the spreadsheet for tracking) between forum and discord. Better would've been to just use the long existing one and give the Discord folks that link.

I much prefer forums as well. Searchable, long form conversation is easier, and I tend to agree with the others that the signal-to-noise ratio is lower (at least on this particular forum - others are horrible).

To your point, Discord certainly has experts available. I don't think anyone here has suggested that there are no experts there, or were targeting any individuals. More targeting the platform itself than anything - and, rightfully so. Discord isn't a good platform, all things considered, for durable and reliable information sharing. It's great for casual chatting and maybe quick Q&A, but anything requiring depth is much better on forums.

1) Just remember we're talking about a couple of hours here, and not a couple of days. As you can tell my my profile - I'm not a very regular forum user. I've said this before - perhaps you overlooked it. I specifically looked for an existing spreadsheet and I didn't find anything at the time I worked on one myself. Because I didn't find one, I shared what I had. The duplication wasn't deliberate. It wasn't personal. It wasn't about advocating one platform over another, and it shouldn't have been interpreted as a "wedge" that was shoved anywhere between two things. Note that once I knew of the existence of another spreadsheet I also didn't continue to tell anyone about the spreadsheet I created -  here, or anywhere else - which is evidenced by how few entries there are.

2) I don't remember ever saying Discord was a better place to be for troubleshooting, and that isn't my opinion either. Forums are a great place for threaded, topic-based interaction. Discord is a great place for real-time general conversation. Forum are a not a great place for real-time general conversation, and Discord is not a great place for threaded,  topic-based interaction. I do specifically remember saying "Each is a tool for a different job" and I still hold that statement as accurate.

3) Although nobody indicated there were no experts there, they certainly did imply that there was a lower ratio of experts there, and said some pretty unkind things.

Neither of these was you, and I don't hold you responsible for anyone else's opinions and viewpoints. Just responding to the idea that nobody said these things. They may not have been personally directed to anyone on Discord, but they were generally directed to everyone on Discord.

This is especially frustrating when you consider that the ratio of experts to non-experts is almost certainly higher on Discord than here on the forums. There are just SO many non-experts here on the forums it would be impossible for it to be otherwise. But that doesn't have me  (or anyone else) saying "You shouldn't use the forums because there are so many non-experts there" does it? I don't understand the outright and open hostility here toward any platform that isn't this forum.

I want to be clear - you all are surely very nice people. You contribute a lot, and I value the time you freely give. Could you try a little harder to be inclusive though? Nobody is devaluing this platform (forums), and I don't think it is kind or nice for you to be devaluing another in an effort to increase the perceived value of what you prefer... maybe you might spend some time thinking about this? There are plenty of great reasons to love forums without resorting to a negative campaign on something else.

With all that said - nothing productive is happening here in this thread, and I don't intend to revisit it. In every post and interaction I've tried to be kind, inclusive, and understanding. I wish you all well.

Discord is a good platform for contained discussions.  I use it for groups where I limit who can discuss a topic.

Hi guys.  I use discord for many reasons.  Mostly I don't use FB at all.  And Prusa Discord is reasonable but I am not on it a whole lot.  I got on there for a specialty group and stuck around for several more.  I find it to be useful for what it is and nothing more.  It can be an argument fest.  Don't make this forum the same.  Agree to disagree.

A Better question: Any updates on delivery of XL's?

😉

What? There's discord on Discord? Who would have thought it? Here on Prusa forums, we employ snark, not arguments. Oh, & the XL will start shipping on Friday.
