RE: Prusa Delays

Concur.  They are relatively cheap at the size of the XL.

Posted by: @tsamisacytanet-com-cy

@richard-3 Not only that but 3d printers don't tolerate particles lying around. I have a cnc (x-carve) for wood and light metal and a germitsu for pcbs and both end up quite a mess after finishing a piece. 3d printer needs cleaning with ipa since it cannot even tolerate fingerprints not sawdust or metal or even plastic particles. I thing with the money needing to make a head and time to create a slicer edition for cutting , its better in terms of quality and money to buy a cheap cnc. In the size range of the XL you can find a wide range of affordable cnc's.

Yup, the latest, if people didn't check out Prusa Live #46 (26/10/22), is that there will soon be an official update. And there are a couple new time lapses of it running with a single colour, single tool head. But at this stage we're being patient for an update which hopefully covers so many questions that weren't covered even in the last update.
Optimism, dwindling.

Thanks for bringing the attention here. I don't watch YouTube for updates, hoping to scrape out some sort of meaningful thing that they really should be communicating to backers in a more direct manner. Hopefully "soon" is, well, soon, but that's already two weeks ago...

There should be an update coming soon.  Formnext is on November 15th.  Supposedly the FINAL version of the XL will be on display at the event.  Hopefully to be followed with details because it will be one year since the XL announcement on November 18th.  I still thinking shipping will be pushed to early 2023.  Additionally, Prusa Live will be on November 23rd.  They will probably have some type of Black Friday deal.

Agree completely , hoping during the delay times they have had a chance to finalize and work out any and all bugs . With the final release chances are good we can get a solid product with minimal issues and possibly even more features added 😁

I see this as well.

Let’s be realistic people. Prusa is having issues getting MK3S enclosures out with a simple filter, light, and power supply. Family friendly version, the global supply chain is completely hosed.

I hope the world learned it’s lesson sourcing everything from a specific country that will not be disclosed here, but I feel we haven’t.

It is important to be realistic.  If you can’t get a Raspberry Pi, how are you going to get all the parts for a printer?

RE: Prusa Delays

Just to be clear where I'm coming from: I totally understand the supply chain issue and I'm willing to patiently wait for my XL.

But I think what gets people a bit riled up about the situation is that they see other printers such as the Bambu ship. Now, if they are better than Prusa at sourcing parts, use inferior parts, or are actually not shipping at all, I don't have the faintest clue, I haven't looked at it seriously. My point is, it's the perception that other companies manage to ship but Prusa can't that gets people nervous. I for one suspect it's not just supply chain issues. None of the recent videos show multi-toolhead examples so I am sure they're still working out issues that have nothing to do with supply chain.

RE: Prusa Delays

I believe they ran into development issues.  When I was at ERRF, I noticed that the toolhead looked a bit different from the initial launch video.  I asked Mikolas about it and he said it’s pretty much the same one.  I also remember sometime after the announcement, a Prusa Live that featured the an interview with the developer of the Nextruder and its capabilities.  Less than a year later, they changed it to Planetary gear system.

I think that the launch will be in early 2023.  There is a slight possibility they will begin shipping the XL in December with an exception.  It will be single toolhead for now and multiple toolheads and power supplies will ship sometime later as the “supply chain” improves.  Similarly to how the enclosure shipped accessories later on.

I’m a Prusa fanboy, but I know when my team has weaknesses in their game.  Bambu has experienced manufacturing engineers and is in close proximity to component manufacturers.  They also have prior business relationships with these manufacturers which allows them to be bumped up the component waiting list.

RE: Prusa Delays

Good point @vincent. I have no issues with this. If something isn’t working right, or can’t be affordably produced on a mass scale, you have to change things up. Revisit them at a later date when you figure things out.

As for taking care of the home team, I’m sure there is some favoritism for team Bambu, as well as the other “local” manufacturers.

RE: Prusa Delays

I would be surprised if they start shipping single extruder versions when they haven't figured out the final multiextruder design and change mechanism. After all the single extruder system would be based on the multiextruder version, even if it has no changing capability without upgrade. But I have of course no special insight in the workings of Prusa. Maybe that is in fact a reasonable option.

RE: Prusa Delays

I think the response is directly proportional to Prusa's communication. If Prusa gets out in front and starts having better communication, I'm certain it won't be too bad. If Prusa insists on keeping people in the dark, then, it won't go so well. It's truly basic product management and not at all difficult. The updates don't even need to be long winded or super detailed. They do need to be easily available, public, and have sufficient information. The company I work for, at the end of each sprint (2 weeks), we provide updates... entire portfolio projects end up about 1-2 pages max (unless some major development needs presented). Smaller features are a paragraph or two. Any well functioning engineering firm should be able to do similarly.

RE:

I think much of Prusa’s issue is in relying on single-sourcing As a younger electronics design engineer it was always discouraged to use any single part that couldn’t be multiply sourced. Prusa’s steadfast stance on only using Raspberry Pi products  in its comm server and other single sourced parts is hurting them. There are alternatives and they should have been working on them a long time ago. There’s a YouTube video channel, Aurora Tech, I think, that reviews a newish 3D printer virtually every week. Management decision making might be a significant issue. I’m very surprised they don’t have a viable core XY option out.

There are not many options available today.

And that may be so.. I'm not in the Industry to know. But Anker and BambuLabs have just developed and delivered thousands of units of a new design in the past 3 years. I just think waiting for the supply chain to change may not be the only strategy.

Don't really care what other companies are doing.  Many have more robust internal production.  You have not proof that Prusa has a single source.  This is purely conjecture.

RE: Prusa Delays

I agree with that statement.  Additionally, I believe Anker just recently started shipping.  Bambu started a few months ago.  So the “…delivered thousands of units of a new design in the past 3 years” is just pure conjecture.

Prusa has been manufacturing their own boards and frames over the last few years.  They want to be vertically integrated but there are some limitations.  For example, the PSU.  The original PSU on the MK3 was I believe of Czech origin.  They had many problems with it (I had to warranty my unit), so they pivoted to a Delta manufactured PSU which is not Czech.   When your company is in close proximity to large scale manufacturers, it becomes easy to get parts and ship your product.
