RE: Prusa Delays

...Something else on the horizon of competition from the Chinese powerhouse Creality. More details to be announced in April.

I wouldn't expect to see this with a toolchanger but knowing their previous machines it could have a similar build volume to an XL.

Their angle is aimed at speed printing so it'll be directly competing with the BBL printers.

Is this something to go with it?

It makes the Prusa control look old.

Yeah that is already available to connect to their (and most other entry level printers). Its essentially a touchscreen and a Pi in a neat package that does the processing.

And yes! I'm still shocked that the Mk3 hasnt had an update for the display/UI. But that's because the control board is so old it can't handle an update like that ( I asked the very question to a Prusa employee at TCT last year). I think the only solution would be to run Octoprint and the printer remains on Marlin. But for the MK3 to STILL be their bread and butter printer with this obsolete hardware...

I've been meaning to respond to this comment.

Really?  Josef Prusa is the founder, CEO and Chairman of the company.  As far as I can find, he is still principle owner (his brother may also have an ownership stake).  Watch this video ( ) that covers the founding.

Prusa Research is a Czech company, applying US fiscal "norms" does not translate.  D&B estimates Prusa Research has revenues between $25M and $100M US per year.  Josef Prusa is an Angle Investor in Czech company Worldee.  Prusa Research has purchased US based Printed Solid and purchased a controlling interest 3D Printer TriLabs.  You really think he is in danger of losing his job?

If I could arrange a meeting between you and Josef, would you tell him what you posted to his face?

Posted by: @milehigh3der

I wonder if anyone has told them that every month that they delay this, the chances of them keeping their jobs, and the value of their equity, goes down for when the company eventually gets sold.  The amateur schtick only goes so far.

Uhm, yes.  Please?   I am the most polite midwestern-American you’ll probably ever meet.  Twenty years of sales and marketing has given me ability to deftly communicate with people.  Twenty five years of project management has also given me the ability to explain to people when they are F’ing things up.  I don’t make that comment about Prusa (more company than person) in a vacuum.  I actually care about him and the company.  The roll out of the XL and AFDS system has pretty much put the nail in the coffin of him being anything more than the figurehead when they sell out.  And that is assuming that they are in a position to decide to sell out and not forced to sell out.  Like I said, the garage/open-source storyline eventually gets stale.  Prusa’s nearly native penchant for overdriving their development headlights is if anything getting worse.  If the XL had been ‘launched’ in late 2019 and we would be where we are now, I’d have more sympathy- but they launched this in the storm.

I’m not the problem.  Just pointing it out.

RE: Prusa Delays

I think we need to wait and see. If the XL does not come out for another year, then Prusa is in trouble. If the XL comes out this or next month and if the reviews are strong, then Prusa is still in the game.

I have read a comment from a beta tester that basically said “we are not disclosing anything because we have an NDA but also because we would be biased for the tons of hours we put into this machine”. This comment tells me that these beta testers (some of the top 3d print experts) are quite happy about the product and it’s shaping to be what they want to see. If that’s the case, it might well be that the XL will be a slam dunk.

Having said this, we need to consider what Prusa means in the market. It’s like talking about Apple and other PC brands. Sure, you can get PCs that are cheaper than Apple computers, but if you want a computer that just works and never gives you an issue, then Apple is the way to go. Also, if you start building a PC that has the same exact qualities of an Apple computer, you’ll soon reach a price similar to the Apple one.

You can buy today cheaper alternatives to an MK3+, but if you want to buy a dual z axis printer with direct drive extruder and the same build quality of a Prusa you’ll end up spending almost the same $. The only exception is the Bambu Lab but it’s still early to see whether these printers are reliable in the long term and whether Bambu Lab can continue selling these products at that price (which in my opinion is lower than the $ they pay to manufacture the printer).

I agree with everything you wrote here, but...

I just can not understand the absolute silence around the project. I just don't understand why JP can't release an update and say: all right fellas this is where we stand.  It certainly makes me wanna cancel the order.

They published an update video in January and he said in the very recent live session that everything is moving forward as planned. I don’t think it makes sense to give an update every day.

RE: Prusa Delays

So Prusa has issued a refund immediately? Some fellas were saying that it would take quite some time to receive the money...

I'm really in need of a new printer for my small business and I might just cancel out if I see no development within few days.

I am astonished to see how people opt for other printers that lack all the innovative features of the XL

Currently there is no other comparable printer with this set of features.

Also not a smart decision to cancel your preorder now, after you have waited such a long time.

It does not matter if that small amount of money is on your Bank accout - you get no interest anyway.

RE: Prusa Delays

If you dont want the multiple heads, then  there are people that prefer an existing printer that they know its specs and that it works. We know about the nextruder which was redesigned last year, we know about the segmented heater bed but we dont know how fast it is. I know is not a race, but if it prints as slow as a printer 5 years ago i dont know if people will prefer the bed and the "infant" nextruder over speed. Also about the "waited for so long" no one can ensure us that is not going to get longer since personally i dont putting my faith in Prusas words. At some point if you want a printer (and not a multimaterial solution like me) you move along because it just not worth the hassle. And not anyone is considering the prepaid amount something negligible that will keep in the bank. For some people is money saved that are going to an existing new printer and not a two year promise that we dont know when is going to be fulfilled. Personally even if I'm disappointed with the whole approach from Prusa, im not cancelling because i have my mk3s and sls1 and can print the things i want and i only preordered it for the multihead option. Also i like to have a single slicer and workflow. Keep in mind that when we FINALLY or IF we get the order notice is going to be a few more weeks before it is actually delivered.

RE: Prusa Delays

It really depends what you want it for. If you're in for the toolchanger (like me) you're 100% correct. There's only the E3D and that isn't cheaper, doesn't have a big user base and no close slicer support.
People who just want a big printer and possibly multicolor printing are ill-advised anyway to wait for the XL. There are cheaper options available already now, and it's always best to buy what is there (inflation, kinks already stomped out, discounts, etc.).

RE: Prusa Delays

These underlined thoughts were the reason I made a day one order.
I need the printer for my work. I have missed a chance to buy discounted FlashForge Guider 2s  and I’m really disappointed that I have not gone that route… But I am going to wait till the end of the month and then reevaluate my decision.

RE: Prusa Delays

@big-z: But...I mean seriously we all know there will be issues in year 1 of the XL. It has been like this with Prusa from the beginning. I'm sure eventually it will be good, but nobody knows when.

If you need a printer for work, maybe the XL will be right for you 2 years from now. I would never (like seriously never ever) advise a friend to get one if they made their living off 3D printing. Get two reliable other printers available now, and at least you have 50% capacity if one breaks down.

RE: Prusa Delays

You are right, maybe -  but - you wrote about innovative features - OK, but WHEN will they be? Yes multiple heads are very important, but if you don´t need 5 tools, than you can buy - and immediatelly get - Voron or BLV Magcube with printbed 350x350. In other way You can wait for Prusa XL, but will it really be real 5 tools without problems? I think not, we can remember problems with MMU and MMU2 - and they looked very innovative too ( at their time). And now nobody except Prusa has possibility to try multihead XL, so how long it will take to bring us multitoool XL for realy everyday use? Several months or year- or more? I have preorded 5head XL, I don´t want to cancel it. Not yet but...

RE: Prusa Delays

This.

However, they had the E3D toolchanger around long enough for testing. Probably software development started way earlier than hardware, to lay the groundwork. Any kinks at launch will most likely be in software, which is open source. There is actually not so much fiddling involved in toolchanging (basically offset calibration and reproducible tool handover), so I don't think MMU is a good comparison. Any filament or nozzle profile that works in single-head mode will work the same in multi-head. So I remain very optimistic. Bottom line is if you don't need multihead, there is no reason to pay premium/wait for the XL.
