I do find it a bit odd that there is no touchscreen. Will it be possible to control the printer from a built-in web interface or app?

In the video, they do show the Prusa Connect Beta Website, which allows for some controlling the printer via browser.

RE: Original Prusa XL is out!

When I was trying to comparing this to other options I quickly realized that only the E3d Tool Changer is in the same class.  The issue with the TC is that it is indented to be a development platform and is 100% kit form and so can involve a significant time investment on top of the significant price.  Other large coreXY options such as the Voron 2.4 are also a kit and have no tool changing, and a smaller build volume.  For non-kit options there are only single tool printers and they are quite a bit more expensive, and often have smaller build volume.

IMO, this is going to be a game changer.  Definitely not for everyone, and likely not for the casual hobby toy. However, for me it is far and away the best option right now for tool changing and large format.  Super excited!

If this were a printer from any one else it would be $8-10k.  An Ultimaker s5 is what, $6k?  The Pro version is 10K.

(Note to Prusa, a filament drier - or at least plans- would be cool, and needed for some materials when printing for days…)

Kinda wish, Prusa would have included a WiFi-card at that price point, instead of ethernet. It'll always be possible to add a cheap Raspberry Pi, etc for Wifi-Ethernet conversion, but having it integrated would have been cleaner.

Yes, good point. I managed to miss that in my excitement!

RE: Original Prusa XL is out!

I was just playing around with excel to try to figure out how big things could be.  So if you put something diagnally, you can print the hypotenuse length, minus the width. Since half the width is lost in each 'triangle' on the end.

I also added if we could double the 360mm to 720, and if you had a meter to play with:

*TOTAL disclaimer on the math

If you look at the new board there looks to be a wifi ariel adaptor on it.

RE:

There are a lot of exciting innovations in this machine but am I the only one who is really interested in how this new extruder gear design will hold up? The double-gear design seems to be the cause of many of the artifact issues which seem inherent to the MK3s and other similar printers. The Prusa XL does not only go back to a single gear system but also has a much larger one. So the grip should not suffer because of that yet the second gear related possible slight inconsistencies in extrusian rate should be removed from the system.

Maybe it will be more challenging to print flexible filaments with the new design but maybe not. Anyhow I am excited to see that thing print. Also it will be interesting to see how reliable the tool changer will be. An "it just works" tool changer for 5 heads would be a game changer for sure.

Has there been any mention of the external dimensions of the XL ? Can´t seem to find any.

I think it will be about 55cm wide (not including the filament) and maybe 60cm deep (including the control panel) and somewhere between 50cm - 60cm tall (not including the filament tubes/extruders). This all based in the images released so far...

UK total cost

Posted by: @chocki

Will there be any issues with ordering from the UK?, I don't want to get stung by another huge bill from the courier when it arrives.

AS far as I can tell from the information if you go to the checkout there is no customs duty to pay on goods from Czechia, but you will have to pay the 20% VAT yourself when it's delivered.  So for a 1 extruder order it would be:

£149.17 Pay now to preorder.

£1,342.50 Pay just before dispatch to settle the balance with Prusa.

£298.33 VAT to pay on delivery.

Total: £1,790 as advertised.

RE: Original Prusa XL is out!

I wish i would have known about this 3 months ago before i purchased the ratrig v-cast , the blv mgn cube , voron 2.4 and Lulzbot taz 5 and orusa mini. All those combined would have been the xl and probably the rat rig v cast. That was only 400. Can't justify this unless i sell my other printers. Can't pay (won't pay) that much for something not making me money. The cool and wow factor are there but I'm too old for that.

Pre-Ordered mine as well, can’t wait for a new project.

Hopefully the supply chains shape up quickly!

I have pre-order with 5 tools 🙂

my  worries are the lack of end of filament detector on the heads.

Z adjustment reliability with the pressure (no pinda).

But there are filament sensors. Maybe not directly inside the heads but at the other side.

Yes with the spool at the start of the ptfe tube. ( As an ultimaker. )

It is ultimaker who must not be happy today.

My 'other' printer is an Ultimaker S5, and the first thing I noticed is the similarity of the Prusa XL to the S5, general design plus the comment in the other thread about the 'disco lights' LED strips.

I would have been in the market for the XL, had I not picked up a 'gently used' S5 about a year ago for less than the price point of the XL with two tools.

I do think that the price of the XL is very competitive compared to the price of the S5 and will offer a lot of bang for the buck.  This will certainly ease Prusa's reputation of being a higher-priced product.

It appears that they are adding some features to the XL to make it more foolproof and require less 'futzing around' such as lack of the need to do Live Z calibration.

I'm sure it will not be to the 'you press the button, it does the rest' simplicity of the Uprint (neither is the S5, but approaching it) but I'm sure it will be less of an issue to get the thing dialed in.

RE: Original Prusa XL is out!

I was watching one of the videos above and process says that they can measure the pressure in the nozzle. That would be really interesting because it would enable them to use a pellet based extruder rather than a filament-based one. If you can measure the pressure you can change how you’re feeding the pellets to actually print. That would be a very good feature for a printer this big.

Read the blog post.  I am pretty sure it a mentions wifi option.

I will edit my order to add 5 print heads later.
