Any info on the Prusa XL?

RE: Any info on the Prusa XL?

I guess the big thing is if they are 'swappable' or are they 'changeable'- I don't see either XL of MKx having the ability to swap heads during a print like the E3D guys printer, but being able to change the head between prints.  That would just take a common electrical harness.

If I could swap heads every-once-in-a-while, I might actually do preventative maintenance by taking one off line and tweaking it up.

The XL isn't going to be a larger Mk 3, I believe it's confirmed as a corexy design.

Gordon - I think that is a typo: The XL “IS” going to be larger than the MK3 or MK3S.  It is a Core XT and is reported to be 300-400mm cubed.

Agreed 😀 I was addressing was "I don't see either XL of MKx having the ability" and explaining that the XL wouldn't be an enlarged Mk 3, but a different design.

What I'd like is an option for a rectangular bed that is 500-600mm in one dimension.  Frankly, 1000mm would be, even if only 300-400mm on the other side.  500 x 1000 would be really sweet.  The idea of a belt/bed is good, especially for production, but I'd like some kind of camera/scanner checking progress.

What I do think is really needed is some kind of quantitative way to measure the tension on the feed gears.  Maybe an oblong shaft that goes between the gears and then a torque wrench to twist it to measure the pressure between the feed gears.

I have a SV-01. I don't think you'll be disappointed. My machine is so quiet that I haven't bothered to upgrade the main board (although I think the SV-03 comes with the "silent" mainboard). I use PrusaSlicer and just slightly reduce all the speeds, works a treat. The limiting thing is 260C max nozzel temp which means you can't print PC. The extruder is a Titan clone and the hotend is a V6 lite clone. I will intend to replace the hotend with a genuine V6 (just one firmware mod needed).

You might need to design your own.  That is a pretty rare size of 3D printer,

You can custom size a Voron printer and it will spit out a BOM for you to kit.

we don't know what in their designs, but i  think we might end up with a cross breed of an ender 5 and a Zmorph fab. This way you have a single  tool head that is changeable and sold as upgrades. Also this way we get a ridged core xy and a tool changer system that is proven.

I hate to inform you that the ender-5 is neither a tool changer or Core XY.

It appears it will be a tool changer and not dual exturder.  The two are subtly different.

I was implying, perhaps optimistically that with interchangeable tools, you (or somebody named Joseph) could design a dual extruder that would fit the "carriage". This is reminiscent of the short-lived, never-really-worked (ask me how I know) Italian designed "Fabtotom" that had interchangeable tool heads including a (single) extruder, a high speed Dremel wannabe milling head for 1/8" shank tool bits and an incredibly weak laser head. Supposedly open-source, you could theoretically have designed a dual extruder to fit the carriage, but the bed was so small, the size of the object which would have been "reachable" by both nozzles would have been about the size of a standard playing card.

out of the yes. but a lot of people put a dove tail slot to turn them in to a tool changer to use laser cutters and a small rotary cutter. aka multi - tool machine.

I guess it could happen, but dual print heads like the MMU2 are for a very small audience.

I don't consider the MMU to be a "dual" extruder. I'm talking about two hot ends/nozzles/filament drives, side-by-side on a common carriage. The MMU (which I happen to have but really never use) is a terribly complicated, cumbersome design, wasteful of both time and material consumed by filament changes which, depending on the complexity of the object, can be incredibly inefficient. Yes, getting two nozzles set up within a few um of each other vertically can be tedious, but it wasn't THAT big a deal on my ancient MakerBot (which I don't use for other reasons, such as an unheated bed). And I don't think it's that much of a niche market. At least give me a tool "kit" that will let me design/build my own dual extruder to fit the XL carrier/gantry. I'd REALLY like to hear from Joe himself exactly why he won't take a D/E seriously. He MUST have heard the clamoring for it; there's money to be made, GO FOR IT JOE!

That is not what I said.  Reread it.  Like the MMU2, the dual extrude is a small niche market.  There are very few buyers that actually need to use a Dual extruder.    The key is the works small or Niche market.  Hopefully, if they decide to do this, they don't make the mistake of roping other users into buying it.

I think more users would hand over some cash for tool changers than a dual extruder.

For those interested in non-automated tool changing: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/printermods/xchange-v10-hot-swap-tool-changing-for-every-3d-printer

No MK3S adapter at this time, but it looks like it would be pretty simple to make an X carriage to hold the mounting plate.

OK, I'll pick that nit: "I guess it could happen, but dual print heads like the MMU2 are for a very small audience." -Ambiguous, IMHO

"I guess it could happen, but dual print heads, like the MMU2, are for a very small audience." -Less ambiguous, but not crystal clear.

"I guess it could happen, but dual print heads and the MMU2 are for a very small audience." -Better.

Knowing your level of expertise here, I suppose I SHOULD have arrived at the correct parsing, my bad. But I do think the appeal of a dual extruder might surprise you. Isn't there a survey/poll/wish list of desired XL features somewhere on this site? Github? If not, it should be.
