What major advantage do you see with the larger filament?

I was expecting something way cheaper than that.

I am a bit confused on the public target. If the XL shares the same options / interfaces with the Pro AFS then why would people spend more money on the PRO AFS version?

It's not like you can't build a print farm with the XL version.

I'm very disappointed in the price. I've been looking at CoreXY printers and was hoping to get an XL. But I can't justify spending that kind of money on a hobby.

Well, for one thing I could make use a bunch of 3mm filament given to me from back in the days of 'yore when 3mm was the standard. 3mm and maybe a .8mm nozzle = manageable print times for large volume items that don't need .1mm (or less) layer thickness.

I didn't actually -and that's why I decided for MK3S+BEAR (clone) few weeks ago. Not to mention, that XL is expected to be a reality in about a year.

Let's be honest, XL isn't meant for home/hobby use. Of course there's a "wish to have" factor, but reality is, majority of us (hobbyists) are looking at up to $1000€ printers. And it's not about if we can afford $3000 printer on not.. it just doesn't make sense for hobby printing.
Yes, XL is packed with interesting features and really looks "cool"... But at the end, it's still FDM printer.

Just sharing my thoughts.

You will not find that list of features on a printer for less than that price and the support Prusa provides.

I hope there is an option for 3mm extruders.

Speaking of heads, there seems to be a derth of information about what "tools" will be offered, other that extruders that you can put a variety of nozzles in, but only compatible with 1.75mm filament. I could REALLY use an extruder that will take 3mm filament. How about a milling head? Could get really messy unless you have aggressive (vacuum?) chip removal, and materials requiring cutting/cooling fluids would be REALLY messy. Or maybe a laser cutting head? Lots of safety and fume removal issues. Probably more doable would be a directed light scanning tool. That could be relatively easily added. That whole package (FFF/milling/laser/scanner) begins to look like the long-defunct Italian Fabtotum machine, two of which are now serving nicely as expensive door stops in my home.

I can't remember where I posted it, but Prusa says that the extruder can sense pressure in it- so if it jams a nozzle  it will stop.  He said it was very sensitive.  Now maybe he is talking about strain on the gear, but if it is really pressure in the nozzle, you should be able to get a pellet extruder to work.  Maybe get a pellet extruder to work for rough work on infill with a big nozzle....

I agree.

The new features are impressive and it should be a more reliable printer.

I just wish they will put some of these features on MK3 size printer.

I am kind of pissed to order an MK3s+ which is still running on a old 8 bit board.

RE: Any info on the Prusa XL?

I am just wondering, for the nozzle head exchange, how would they handle dropping filament? Like, you print with head 1, park it in park position, take head 2 to print another color. When then chaning back to head one, it will for sure have some filament dropping out of the nozzle, wouldn't it? Or retract before, but then you need to fill the nozzle again apropriately when printing again with that nozzle.

Also I have some doubt about that nozzle leveling procedure, as there will always be a minimum of plastic remaining on the nozzle, wouldn't it?

I've got a Mini and an MK3S+ and would like to get another printer. But I don't think I can bring myself to buy another 8 bit board with an out-dated display. I never thought I'd consider something besides a Prusa but I'm starting to look more closely at the Rat Rig V-Core 3.

Hi Tracy,

I am in the same situation. Owner of an MK3S and Mini looking for an core xy.

Rat Rig are a lot more expensive than PRUSA.

If you select a correct settings you wouldn't be far from an XL which has a lot more features and capabilities.

I wouldn't waste my money on a Rat Rig setup.

I think without detail specifications as max. print-speed and stuff like that, you cannot really tell, which one is better. More user friendly, I think that is a point that Prusa will take for sure. But I am really wondering if the print speeds are up to what the competitors achieve (not meaning single units trimmed to max speed, but really reliable for all printers of the same model).

I guess the big thing is if they are 'swappable' or are they 'changeable'- I don't see either XL of MKx having the ability to swap heads during a print like the E3D guys printer, but being able to change the head between prints.  That would just take a common electrical harness.

If I could swap heads every-once-in-a-while, I might actually do preventative maintenance by taking one off line and tweaking it up.

Well......

actually, kind of exactly like the E3D five head tool changer, just better.

I figured it would be a core-xy, but I too was shocked that they did a tool changer.  And that new extruder and 16 zone bed, wowzer!

Please consider the time you spend to debug/solve issues. (just for precise I'm not from Prusa :D)

Take into account the time lost due to bad printing or inadvertent stop and you should restart since the beginning.
This XL printer have a LOT of improvements who pause the print before an error who force you to restart all and seem to solve first layer or calibration issues.

Prusa probably already using these printers 24/24h in their farm (or I'm wrong and use their new conveyor belt printers..) and this will solve most day one issue when begin to ship this printer to end customer. Calculate how many time you have lost due to printing issue because your printer is more basic.

I have a mk2s and take a second one bigger printer but if I can come back in the paste I not take this bigger printer and take a dual head XL from Prusa. May be try to resell this second one printer and put myself in waiting list their youtube movie convince me at 100% 🙂 (I haven't felt like this for a while when watching a video..)

RE: Any info on the Prusa XL?

will there be any wiping when changing print head during a print?
filament will leak while idling

My hint: have a look to E3D toolchanger.

It is already in use in the market.

You will have a fair understanding of what can be expected from the XL toolchanging system (even if, yes, Prusa will customize it to its personal needs, convictions and vision)
