Under Extrusion and Filament Getting Stuck (Clicking Noise) on all 3 XLs
Hello, lucky enough that we now have 3 XLs at work but all of them are having the same issue on a variety of parts. As soon as it gets to the infill stage of a print the printer starts to under extrude and then eventually the nozzle gets blocked. has anyone else had this experience? we have been testing for a week and have not been able to get a successful large print yet.
We have tried all the usual stuff, changed settings re -assembled etc etc nothing seems to change the problem. the G-code all looks fine and we are using the default slicer settings for the 0.6 Nozzle
Which filament(s)?
Cheerio,
RE:
Have you tested the max flowrate with acceptable print results with your filament and your settings? Stefan's extrusion test is a good tool to check that: https://www.printables.com/model/342075-extrusion-test-structure
You can compare then if your infill speed with the 0.6 mm nozzle is surpassing that max flow rate. That could be certainly a cause for troubles if it does as the material is not being properly molten then anymore.
The other calibration you might want to look into with your specific material is printing a temperature tower. From high temp to low. If you have a clogging issue it will fail maybe at the lower temp range given for the filament. If that is the case raising the hotend temp by 5-10°C compared to your previous settings can resolve the issue without real changes in print quality.

PS: If your issue is related to the max flow rate, using the adapter for V6 nozzles and a CHT-nozzle in your XL extruder could help as well.

As an update this is what keeps happening the filament gets soft and buckles at this point. The area around this part of the filament is fairly hot. even the metal PTFE tube socket part is fairly hot. I think the PETG is getting too warm and when retracted repeatedly it eventually buckles and causes a blockage. any thoughts? its the same on all three of my XLs even though they print perfectly with PLA. I have tried both 0.6 and 0.4 nozzles and 0.4 is better than 0.6 but still tends to fail in this way with PETG.

We are experiencing the same issue. With the new XL. Cant find any troubleshooting help.
Using Prusament PLA, 0.6 Nozzle, Updated to 4.7.1 firmware, 2.6.0 Slicer update

Hi! Same with my semi assembled one! It occurs when I use more than half the heated bed i.e large footprint prints. I am guessing heat creep? As its summer and hot in my room that might also be an issue. Mk3s in enclosure prints fine. Contacted support they said noone else has reported that issue and their fix is adding thermal paste between the heatsink and heatbreak? Haven't tried yet as i am trying to make an enclosure and am not sure exactly where to put the paste..

I'm saying this more to highlight that this is not something affecting all XLs, not to offer any help (I wish I could), but I'm not seeing this on my XL. I've been using it a lot more than I expected (considering I bought it for its multi tool head ability) and I've been quite positively surprised. No clogs with PETG, with 0.6 or 0.4 nozzles. The main problem I've had (aside from the many problems with wireless or wired data transfer) was filament stuck in the large PTFE feeder tube when I didn't remove the PETG right away (not an issue with PLA)

Do you happen to know the room temperature? Did you do prints using the entire bed? ( I had reproducible failures while printing a 8x8 gridfinity grid, lowering the bed temp helped but it didnt finish)
RE: Under Extrusion and Filament Getting Stuck (Clicking Noise) on all 3 XLs
Ok so we have solved the filament getting stuck issue, its heat creep. if you reduce the PETG temperature by 15 degrees it helps a lot, we have not had a problem with filament getting stuck since reducing the temperature. Now the prints are able to finish we are noticing that the corners look terrible. the parts in the images are supposed to be square at the corners. all print perfectly in PLA, but in Prusament PETG they look terrible
Printed using default settings with a few extra perimeters to try and help, Prusa support recommended turning the print fan off for the first 30 layers this does help a bit but not much. The part isn't coming off the bed at the corners so its not that causing the warping, it looks more like an internal shrinking pulling in the edges, any ideas?

I get similar issues to this.. Tagging along this thread to see what comes of it.

same issue here

Same here on a factory assembled multi tool unit with extrusion issues and weird layer banding problems. Been working with prusa support for 5 weeks now . Newest update is a few things they want me to go through this weekend with regards to the Z Bearing Housings , PTFE Tube positions in the docks , and hot end clogs or deformations . Hoping something will resolve this .

On my 3rd pass on a first print and having the same issue. The print starts fine. Looks wonderful in fact and then about 30mins in there is clicking and the filament not feeding. I can see the printer is printing air. Nothing coming out of the nozzle. I do a "Change Filament" so I unload and reload and it will start ok. On the unload I can see the filament that was in the head is all buggered up where the feed gears are and the filament is all scraped up. It is summer, and it is hot but I have a fan on it to keep the computer cool. On my MK3 that is all I needed for printing in the summer, just keep the CPU cool and no issues. My MK3 is printing right now in the garage next to the XL and it seems fine.

Hello, we have found a fix that is working really well. We have consistently great looking prints and no blockages. It’s fairly simple
for PETG
- turn cooling fan off for entire print
- print at 230°c for all layers
- bed temp 68°c
- we also got much better results with 0.4 Nozzle and adding a few more perimeters to our parts
hopefully that helps!

While I like this and I will try this, we should NOT have to be doing this. The standard profiles "should" work. The fact that they don't for so many of us, to me at least, speaks to a fundamental design flaw. We should not be seeing this. I'm a little surprised at the comment of turning the cooling fan off. In my head I've been thinking that I needed more cooling not less. That is kind of counter to believed root cause of the issue. I may try first with the recommendation on the temp settings but leave the fan on.
RE: Under Extrusion and Filament Getting Stuck (Clicking Noise) on all 3 XLs
Most definitely a bad flaw someplace in the design . Starting to wonder is it’s an overheating issue of the design or an oddball heatcreep . The large size of the machine and using a 6 nozzle should be flawless prints . Having to drop to a 4 and turn off all cooling . For some reason the blistering , inconsistent layering and underextrusion is all pointing to an extruder issue . Yet the MK4 with almost the same style prints flawless . Still working though the email and tests that they’re sent me on Friday so I’ll post my results in a day or two

I have been printing some rather large parts for my enclosure. I haven't had any issues. I have been printing them in Sunlu PLA and they have been coming out very good. I am printing them in .20 layers using the generic PLA settings.
RE: Under Extrusion and Filament Getting Stuck (Clicking Noise) on all 3 XLs
Yeah we had great results with PLA too, this problem of warping and and jamming was only ever for PETG
