Y Axis now bashing repeatedly during homing

Anybody else observing that during print homing sequence the Y axis (and sometimes also X axis) bash repeatedly 10 or more times against the end stop?

Yes. Seeing this too, along with message "Y axis homing failed". However it homes eventually and the print starts.

Yes seeing the same thing on mine with the alpha firmware. It always ends up working though.

Yes I get this as well, on the Y axis. After reporting failure, printing goes ahead without apparent issues

This phenomenon has also been with me since the first FW version since the release of the printer. So it is not new.

Occasionally seeing this on my MK4, and I am NOT using the alpha firmware.  Usually “2 bumps” when homing Y, but sometimes it reports Failure and tries again.  Most I’ve counted was “12 bumps” before it succeeded.  Has always continued fine with no intervention.

RE: Y Axis now bashing repeatedly during homing

Today my MK4 repeatedly bashed at the Y endstop, 18 times I think, then reported a "crash detected".  It then rehomed X and Y (the normal 2 bumps on X, and 12 on Y) which succeeded -- and the print started normally after that.

Again, I'm using 4.6.2 -- not the alpha.  I sure hope this is a firmware problem and not something mechanical.  It *seems* to be getting a little worse each day for me, but that could be my imagination...

I'm now seeing this too, it didn't used to happen. I'm using 4.6.4, so it doesn't seem to be specific to the alpha firmware.

I too had this on my shipped with 4.6.2. Also found that when I started a large print via USB, the y home failed, then the screen would go black. View via the Connect App was fine. Got in touch with support, who asked me to load 4.6.4. No further issues. I'm reluctant to load 5.0 until it us officially released.

I loaded 4.6.4 today, since it fixed this for you. The first two homings worked perfectly - then the next did the 12-bash thing before succeeding.  On another print,  it repeatedly bashed about 18 times (showing a “y axis homing failure), then said a crash had been detected, re-homed x and a, then did y again - which took 12 bashes before it succeeded.

What’s really odd is that sometimes it still succeeds with the normal 2 bumps.  Have been looking for a pattern (like first homing after power, or after a print, bed hot vs cold, etc.) but so far seems completely random.

Same thing happens to me. And it seems like it gets worse day by day, today I got my first “crash detected” on 4.6.4 and it actually went on a loop until I rebooted the printer. After 2h with support, the only answer I got was “we’ll start investigating” and I’m still waiting for their follow up via email. Fw doesn’t really matter (tried with alpha 5 and 4.6.4).

I loaded 4.6.4 three days ago (Jun-17), and continued to have the same issues with it afterwards on prints that day.  But I have done a couple dozen prints yesterday and today, and the Y homing worked with the normal two bumps every single time!  I have no idea what changed… Maybe a power cycle was needed after 4.6.4 was loaded?  In any case, I haven’t seen the Y-homing problem for 2 days now, and I’ve been doing a LOT of test prints, trying to refine print profiles.

And now this morning I have to pray for it to not go into a crash detected loop. It's becoming unusable. It actually is unusable.

I feel SO stupid. Spent 10 minutes with support, they asked "Have you checked that the heatbed cable is not touching anything while moving back?"

.... and well, that solved it.

Check if your heat bed cable is touching something. If it does, that's the culprit.

Yeah, the problem just seems to come and go.  Nothing behind my printer, so cable interference wasn't the problem.  As I said, I haven't seen it for a couple days now, despite doing a lot of prints.  Intermittent problems are hard to pin down!

RE: Y Axis now bashing repeatedly during homing

Oh, thought it was just something I did wrong. Mine is a kit version I built over the weekend. Printed fine a few times, then progressively more and more bashing until it wouldn’t print at all. I tightened up the Y belt, as it seemed to have maybe stretched a little over a few days? That solved it for now, we’ll see if it holds. The belt tensioning app is really cool but doesn’t seem to work great for the Y axis belt. It picks up a resonance somewhere for me and tells me like 180Hz bouncing all over the place unless I pluck *super* softly and then it can barely hear but registers correctly. Anyway, my assumption was my belt was just a bit loose but we’ll see if the issue comes back.

RE: Y Axis now bashing repeatedly during homing

After not seeing this for several days (dozens of prints), it started again today.  Same firmware (4.6.4).  The printer has not been physically moved, same bed/nozzle temps, same bed sheet, nothing obstructing the bed.  Started taking multiple bashes, sometimes ending at 12 and sometimes 18-24 then reporting a "crash" and starting the entire homing sequence over.

The first time (today) that it happened, I just hit the reset button.  After reboot, I restarted the same print.  That time it did the normal "2 bumps" and succeeded.  But on the very next print, back to 12 bashes again.

The only think I can think of that changed...  The last few days have been cool weather, so the room temp was around 20C, whereas today it is warmer -- with the room temp about 26C.  I can't imagine those 6 degrees making a difference -- but I also can't think of ANYTHING else that is different today.

RE: Y Axis now bashing repeatedly during homing

Support made me check the y motor pulley, I had the grub screws not in the right position and it was too close to the motor.

i did it and it seems fixed for now, but somehow I’m sure it will return 😂

it’s definitely a sw problem, I keep thinking that it’s due to the y-axis trying to go just a tiny bit back more than physically allowed.

I’m quite positive that if they would give a tiny bit of tolerance on the back most position it would fix it, but they keep thinking it’s hardware and very isolated.
