Extruder doesn't go low enough in Z axis

I've had two occasions now when I replaced a nozzle and the Z axis calibration is lost.  I can't even manually (via the Z control) lower the nozzle closer than about 80mm above the platter.  Tried turning off the power and resetting, this seemed to work one time, but not working now.  Firmware 5.0.0.

I don't quite understand the problem.

When you turn on the printer, Z=0 no matter where you are. It will not go below this value.

Only when you do manual homing or the print starts, the z axis knows where it is.

Or can you not homing ?

It won't home to the platter in the Z axis.   I read where someone else had this problem and worked around it by turning the unit off, rotating the Z threaded rods to lower it and then turning the unit back on.  This worked for me too.
