5.0.0-RC Firmware for Original Prusa MK4

Hi,

the firmware polishing of Input Shaper for Original Prusa MK4 is in its final stage, therefore it is time for a release candidate 5.0.0-RC. In case no major bugs are found, the next release will be a stable version of the Input Shaper for MK4.

Important steps:

  1. Read the full release notes on GitHub
  2. Flash the new 5.0.0-RC firmware
  3. Download the latest PrusaSlicer profiles for Input Shaper
  4. Leave feedback (vote in the poll and share your suggestions)
    • In case you select "No" in the poll, please add you suggestion in the comments.

Have a nice weekend and Happy Printing! 🙂

I haven’t yet run the alpha firmware, but I’m thinking of putting the RC firmware on my MK4.

I’m assuming we still use the alpha printer profile in PrusaSlicer, given that I don’t see any new printer profiles?

There was a configuration update for PrusaSlicer a few days ago and the IS profiles have new names now (speed and structural) as described in the changelog for the RC.

So far I’ve only had problems; the nextruder jamming (clicking) at the start of print, even though it had loaded the filament seconds before. Nozzle cleaning took well over a minute. Several times I had to reset the printer to get passed that point

Its probably more a slicer issue, but if its not fixable there should at least be a warning in the slicer. Input shaping with grid infill will fail in many cases. The grid overlaps cause the nozzle to catch at those speeds and it starts tearing through the infill.

Confirmed it is still happening on this RC firmware, at least with PETG.

Is crash detection still not working? The release notes on the first alpha made it seem like it's not compatible with input shaping at all, so it'll never come back, but I'd like to think that's not the case otherwise that would be a HUGE bait and switch.  They made no mention of it after that.  Can someone confirm if it works? If not, would really love if someone from Prusa could comment on that and confirm if it is in the works and coming back or if it's a done deal that it is not.

Alpha 4 was working well for me. So Far, I see no issues with the 5RC . I love the new Input Shaper firmware. Cuts at least 50% of time from prints with no recognized degradation of print quality. Win-Win!!

I tested the vase mode with the 5.0.0 RC and the new slicer profiles (structural 0.4mm IS) and there is still the problem that a nat and the retracts are visible.

With the 4.7.2 it works without problems.

Will this firmware also contain other lanuages than english?

As I can see on Github there are already translation files existing in 4.7.2, but not available on the printer.

I recently installed the firmware and encountered an unexpected issue. Could you please review the GitHub issue report for details: [Link to the report]?

RE: 5.0.0-RC Firmware for Original Prusa MK4

I have tested them for the last 24 hours.  Works pretty well for me.

I test-printed an object that was essentially a large tube.

Speed:

  • MK3S - 10h 43 M
  • MK4 - 7h 48 M
  • MK4 Input Shaper - 4h3M
  • Bambu P1P - 3h 43M

2 Inch(51mm) x 2Inch cube:

  • MK3S - 2h4m
  • MK4 - 1h33m
  • MK4 Input Shaper - 50m
  • Bambu P1P - 50m

I cannot figure out why round tube objects take longer in the Mk4 with input shaping but it is significant.

That might be a better question to be posted on GitHub.

Crash detection is not enabled in 5.0.0-RC. You can test this by pushing on the bed or extruder during a print, and you'll get a layer shift instead of a crash.

I briefly ran a self-compiled version of the firmware, and noticed there was a dev menu item to enable crash detection, but I didn't try it.

Thank you for testing it! If you ever decide to enable it, report back.  I'm going to wait until the stable release before installing 5.0

The fact that there's a dev menu item for it though gives me some glimmer of hope.

Running this now. Reprint of a part I just did without IS that was 17 hours on 0.3 mm Speed, cut it down to 11 hours with 0.2 mm Speed IS.

Impressive, it’s printing 50% more layers yet the time is still cut by 65%.

FYI: Prusa says (for the MK3) to test crash detection, pinch the smooth rods on the X-axis near the extruder while printing. In bold letters they say do not push the extruder, as this does not simulate a real printing experience (a crash stops the extruder/bed, but does not push it). I think I also saw somewhere that Josef has stated that pushing can cause crash detection to not work, even if it works for actual crashes.

Caveat: I haven't ever tested crash detection myself.

How do the profiles in PrusaSlicer look now? Have they been fleshed out and added flexibles etc. or are we still limited to PLA and maybe PETG?
