Prusament PETG Hates Me

I'm giving up and posting...

I've had my Mini+ for the better part of 2 weeks. Printing PLA from TECBEARS works fairly well. I use the Prusa Slicer settings for Generic PLA. Then I start feeling confident and switch to the Prusament PETG in both Urban Grey and now Jet Black. I reslice using the pregen Prusa Slicer settings and invariably the prints just start to fail. I've reassembled the hotend at least three times. I've run calibration after calibration model, but I'm stumped. After 48 hours of pulling my hair out, I just switched back to TECBEARS PLA and lo and behold the darn think is printing like a champ. All filament is new. I'd love some help. Using the .4mm stock factory nozzle.

I do switch to the textured bed which has seemed to be part of the problem sometimes...PETG not sticking...sigh...

So fall apart means ... doesn't have a good first layer?  Learn about live z.  Every filament, sometimes every color needs a potential Z adjustment.  If not sticking, go lower (closer to the bed)

Did you recalibrate your first layer? The textured (and satin) sheets are a fair bit thinner than the smooth sheet, so your Live Z needs to be adjusted down (more negative).

@fuchsr

I sure did...recalibrated, printed a good first layer, but then just bleh. A buddy mentioned the possibility of PETG not responding well to PLA residue in the hotend? Still stumped...

Never had any issues printing PETG right after PLA. If anything it's the other way around if you don't load PLA at PETG temperatures after printing PETG.

Do you have any pictures?

I'll give that a try and rerun some prints. Thanks so much for the thoughts!

My limited experience with PETG is that it can be tricky. I had problems related to the extruder where the filament forms a knot in the extruder and is then stuck. Lowering extraction length helped. Some days ago I had trouble again, the extruder had problems pushing the filament (idler screw too lose? Not fixed yet). So yeah, PETG is more demanding.

I usually have "Avoid crossing perimeters" set in print settings, as to me it seems that this will lessen the tendency of ruining the print on some parts. My Z is low enough that the bottom of the part melts so that it reflects the surface of textured sheet, one can not tell separate filament draws apart. I use textured sheet exclusively.

How do your prints fall apart, details please? Does the plastic start to stick with the hot head? Or does the filament not stick properly on the sheet at early stages when the outline of the part is being made? Something else?

I'm using exclusively PETG (plan to to try PC Blend and PCCF) and apart from slight stringing on some parts I'm pretty happy. Even the stringing is not that bad, e.g. the 3DBenchy prints real fine, and has only handful of hair thin strings.

Initially I printed few small area parts on smooth sheet and thought that there are no problems until I printed 3DBenchy on it. The benchy was fine, but after tearing it of the sheet the sheet was not. it is real good that the sheet has two sides. 🙂

Most of my problems with PETG were with the Z and on same parts when the print head repeatedly crossed same area of the part, the plastic started to generate small blobs and in some cases the part was ruined (if this continued on same spot). First problem was solved with adjusting the Z and latter is covered for most part with the "Avoid crossing perimeters" in print settings.

We have very experienced users here ready to help you (I'm a noobie), but you really need to describe properly the nature of your problem.

Anyway, I have reached state were I can start up the printer, choose the part to be printed and go away.
My mini is stock, except it has the PINDA from MINI+ (nearly upgraded to MINI+). I slice using Prusa slicer and use Prusament PETG (currently Carmine Red loaded, no issues with other colors so far).

To be precise: When doing to Z-calibration, the one can see the individual filaments which create the square, but they are pretty well melded together. The surface of the square is almost smooth when you try with a nail.
