How to print object with a lip?
I'm trying to design a replacement water bowl for my bird feeder, which sits inside a hoop on the feeder itself.
What I can't figure out is how print the part of the model with the lip - I don't think supports would be practical as they'll go all the way round, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to model the lip such that it's "tapered" down to the external wall of the bowl (thereby getting rid of an impossible overhang).
I thought about horizontally cutting the model into 2 pieces, printing the lip separately and gluing the parts, but as the lip will be the weight-bearing section, I'm not sure that's wise, either.
Any guidance/ideas would be much appreciated!

Why wouldn't supports work ? That's what they are for. Just use PS2.4 and turn on the snug supports option, turn down the first layer expansion to 0, contact z distance of 0.2 and let it do its thing.
You could invert it and print the bottom of the bowl as bridged but the spans look too long to do that reliably, at least with anything like the stock parts cooling fans. Even with the upsized 5015 fans and petsfang duct on my big printer I wouldn't do something that sized and that setup is twice as good as any stock fan system.
If you wanted to get rid of the lip then modelling in the taper you mention is also a 2 second job in something like blender.
Post your zipped up model or project file from PS and we can either a) set up the support for you or b) modify your model and then post the update back. Must be zipped or the forum doesn't accept the files.

What @nehophyl said, if you set "Support on build plate only" you should be fine.

🙂 oh... I don't know why, but I've only ever thought to use supports for the odd "sticky out" bits here & there.. Thank you for the "ohhhhh that's obvious now you've said it" learning moment!
I need to make a few sizing adjustments to the model, but, for sure I'll post my results here.
RE: How to print object with a lip?
(sorry to resurrect an old thread, but life/work have been getting in the way fun/3D printing of late).
I printed my water bowl, and it looks ok, but is there an art to cleanly removing this much support material? I made a start but can't seem to get any areas to look tidy:
RE: How to print object with a lip?
Maybe you can make a chamfer, with chamfer you don't need any supports.
