Disappearing parts

Hi.  I have found this problem on the forum and have tried various suggestions but have not had any success.  I made this (what I thought was) simple model in Sketchup Free.  I have found that upon slicing a whole central chunk of it disappears leaving only a couple of bits at each end.  I have done repair stl file but no joy.

I have attached the file I think...having saved it to 3mf format)

Any ideas please?

You need to zip up files to attach them to the forum (or github).  Otherwise it just silently doesn't.  No warnings.

Missing parts when sliced are usually model errors.  But go ahead and zip it up and attach and we can take a look.

RE:

Is that 3mf a saved Prusa Slicer project 3mf or is it just model geometry ?

Edit I see its a project file 🙂  When loaded in the model in the tree list shows the yellow triangle so there are certainly model errors.  Also I can see open non manifold edges as I have the option in preferences > gui > show non manifold edges enabled.  That shows them in purple.  and your model has them.

Hi,

That is the saved Prusa Slicer project.  The one that shows the error. Thanks

I also took the model into Blender and it shows the non manifold edges too.  Non Manifold geometry causes slicers a great deal of problems.  Its usually the killer for slicing.  Both Blenders 3dprint tool fixed your model but also the one built into PS that is available if you are using the windows version can fix it so it slices correctly.

Although I would suggest that figuring out what workflow you did in your CAD when creating it that results in the issue would be better to know.  That way you can avoid similar problems in the future and don't have to rely on the repair tools.  While they are ok, there are many times that they don't succeed and can't repair a model.

Hi,

Thanks for the tips.  I don't see the option you mentioned in Preferences (see image).

Thanks

What OS or version are you using ?  that's no where near enough settings in the preferences.  On the Windows build there are 5 tabs worth.  The gui tab alone has more than you are showing for all of them

That's with 2.7.1 but even at 2.4 there are still way more.

After loading the object, error messages appear. Screendump 1.

After clicking on the exclamation mark that appears in front of the object name, the errors are fixed. Screendump 2.

After clicking the >slice now< button, the object now looks like this. Screendump 3.

I think this one is fine and printable, provided you use support at the narrow end.

RE: Disappearing parts

McMuckle, you can try that but the bit I think Rene is missing in this whole thing is you are on Linux.  The fix that can actually fix those non manifold errors in PS are only available to the Windows install.  Windows has a built in tool licenced from an older version of the netfabb tool.  Its built into the OS and PS can take advantage of it by calling it via an API.

Unfortunately it isn't available to Linux or Mac builds.  Some users on the PS github have complained about this and say that PS isn't linux capable because of its lack and want it removed completely.  Like why would you remove something that works for a large percentage of your user base ?

You will have to use other avenues to fix your model, you could use Blender as its 3dprint tool can fix many of the same issues that the netfabb based one ca.  Better is as I suggested learning why the sketchup cad is introducing them.  Sketchup does not have a good reputation from what I recall when it comes to error free models for 3d printing.

Hi,

Thanks for that, it explains a lot.  I have gone back over the Sketchup model and found some areas for improvement.  For the original file I found this worked
