So the Bondtech heat-break still has a piece of PTFE tube inside?

@towlerg

Yes it does, but shorter. 35.3mm instead of the stock 43.4mm.

Regarding how tight the PTFE tube should be, I received this email from Bondtech:

Hi Wouter and thanks for your mail, as the PTFE in the Prusa heatbreak is in the hot-zone it is critical to tighten it down to avoid having a pocket for melted filament, as the PTFE sits in the cold zone on our heatbreak it is not as critical.

So that's great to hear! I also asked them if they had cheaper shipping (18 euro product + 18 euro shipping feels off for me), they don't, and if they could post some more thermal data of their heatbreak vs prusa heatbreak on their site, they'd look into it.

I bit the bullet and ordered one.

I also ordered one. By the way, in the next days they're going to add a cheaper untracked shipping option (using Postnord, Sweden's main postal company). For me in the Netherlands shipping cost went down to ~€2.30 (iirc) instead of the tracked packet which costs ~€18.

I've emailed Bondtech asking for clarification. They also have a chamfer in the PTFE tube whereas Prusa has a flat end.

Please post what you get for an answer. I bought the Mini to make parts based on Prusa’s reputation, not to spend my time as a beta tester.

I too have ordered the BondTech heat break as well as their dual and a silicon carbide nozzle so I can do carbon fiber filled nylon. I’m am will to spend a little upgrade cash to have a small reliable printer.

Just got my Bondtech heatbreak in. Will be installing it later today.

Thanks. Is it worth it to get some Capricorn tubing to replace both the piece in the heat break and the Bowden tube? I understand that it is better quality with a higher temperature rating.

Anybody knows what are dimensions of heatbreak?

@benji

What about your Bondtech heatbreak? Have you already tested something?

@marek-w6

First print after calibrating was a 6hr egg. Came out really nicely. I have been printing face shields for the past two days now and no problems yet. Too soon to say if this fixed my problems for good. For now I'm happy with my Mini and the Bondtech heatbreak.

@benji

When I asked about the heatbreak dimensions, I wanted to check if it was possible to use the heatbreak with the i3 MK3. Of course after machining. Maybe even with heaterblock. This is the last chance solution. If you can attach some photos after the tests.

Would be interesting to know his to when it has been used for a bit. Just wish they you could get them in the UK. It would come to £33 after shipping, fees, etc.

@ste

Did you see wouterv's post above. What a pity this board doesn't have numbered posts.

Mine has shipped. I was a little disappointed that I couldn't order extra PTFE tubes on their site. The tube is described as:
1x 35.3 mm 2/4 chamfered PTFE tube

I don't know what the 2/4 chamfered part means. Can anyone interpret? Hopefully someone will create a jig to let us make extras.

It just means 2mm/4mm tube with chamfers.

Doh! Thanks. I thought it was referring to the amount of chamfer 😊

I have a hunch this may be a thermal/creep related problem.  I went through all the typical fixes, hotend scoot, extruder cleaning, etc. to notice that the PTFE tube shrank significantly, approximately 1mm.  Replacing the tube seems to have fixed my issues for now.

My issues seemed to be exacerbated by an ASA print at high temp.  Wonder if insufficient cooling at the heat break is causing the PTFE tubing to shrink around the filament path and trigger under extrusion.

We'll see how long I last with the updated PTFE tube.
