Mini + erroneous thermistor error messages

New guy here, forgive me if I'm completely overlooking something here. I used the search function in here and couldn't find help for this.

I just got this machine (had been sitting for a while) and when I fired it up, everything seemed to work but printed the first layer test poorly. So I updated the firmware to 5.1.2 and tried again. It still printed poorly so I cleared everything off the thumb drive, unzipped and loaded the files again, then did factory reset through the onboard controller (thinking someone before me maybe had settings screwed up or something) then installed the thumb drive again. Now when I power it up and go through the prompts for setup wizard, I get one of two error messages; "check heatbed thermistor wiring" or "check print head thermistor wiring" but I am certain they're erroneous because there were no error messages and everything heated and worked fine before I tried the update and factory reset. Can anyone help with this?

Sorry for the novel, just trying to sort this thing out. Thanks in advance for any help!

RE: Mini + erroneous thermistor error messages

Obviously, these error messages may in fact be legit. Because you didn't have a problem yesterday doesn't mean you don't have one today.

That said, once I upgraded my Minis to whatever the first firmware version was that implemented Prusa's new thermal protection model, all hell broke loose for me. Never had an issue before. I checked all wires and board connections, replaced the thermistor (with a genuine Prusa part), no dice. If I check the PrusaConnect logs, no signs of any overheating. I blamed it on the Dragon hotends I'm running on the Minis but I've seen enough reports from other users to now know that's probably not the case. On the Mk3S I can at least disable the check permanently, no luck on the Minis.

What works for me: before I load filament, I preheat the nozzle to 180 degrees. This—for reasons unknown to mankind—seems to get rid of the alerts. As long as I don't turn the printer off, I can let the printer cool down, heat up again, load filament, etc, without any issues. Now, despite that one of my Minis also throws random alerts at, well, random times. I can print for days fine, then suddenly an error after a few minutes of printing. Again, I've checked the wires, replaced the thermistor, etc.

Make sure the printer is not in too cold area, AFAIR some people were complaining that too low room temperature may trigger thermistor errors, make sure the room is at least 20C (around 70F), so certain sheds or garages may need extra heating 😉

Luckily my workshop is  (miraculously) 69 degrees all year round.

RE: Mini + erroneous thermistor error messages

Hey all, thanks for all the replies. I messed with it when I got home from work today and think I got it figured out. The firmware was WAY outdated and it was about 36 degrees last night when I was messing with it, but now that everything is updated it seems like it's all working right now. I'll see how it is tonight when it's cold AF in the garage again lol! Thanks again for the help, it seems like all is well for the moment. Now I've gotta learn how to use the thing! Wish me luck and I'm all ears for suggested projects for a rookie!

One more question if you guys will indulge me (off topic); if I want to run the printer from my computer and I don't have the wifi module yet, how do I hardwire to the printer? Is it with the ethernet port? Or do I remove the USB thumb drive and run a USB cable between them? I want to be able to use the PrusaSlicer software and drive from my computer instead of putting everything on the thumb drive and swapping back and forth. Thanks for any help you can give me!

Keep usb pendrive in the usb port.

Just attach ethernet port to the printer and reach it over IP address, see https://help.prusa3d.com/article/prusa-connect-local-mini_133279

how do I hardwire to the printer? Is it with the ethernet port?

Just to be clear, the ethernet port needs to be connected to a router, access point, etc, not the computer directly, and the computer needs to be on the same network. Theoretically it's possible to connect a device directly to a computer but that requires a lot more configuration.

To be really precise, connect printer to one of the free LAN ports on the home router or ethernet switch which is connected to home router to LAN port.

Accesspoints are quite different things, but I assume if someone has access points or mesh network then they are more aware of the networking in general.

Ahhh, I gotcha. So there's no way to direct hardwire from the computer to the printer, it has to go through the router correct? That would make sense why I couldn't find any instruction on doing it. Seems weird that you can't hardwire but oh well. I'll have to order the wifi module because my router is like 100 feet away inside the house lol! Thanks again for the help!

RE: Mini + erroneous thermistor error messages

It is doable with direct connection but much more complex because you need to connect with crossover cable and configure network on your own.

For WiFi module, you probably would have to check which device works best, there is a lost of recommended modules in one of the sticky threads which leads to Google sheet with device list.

Better is to buy some simple router which can be in access point mode or mesh, where you connect it wirelessly to existing network and then can connect other devices to it over the cables to the switch ports. Even old OpenWRT or other 2.4GHz device could do it, and th printer itself does not need fast network.
