Have to be concerned about this clicking noise?

Do i have to be concerned about this clicking when the printer enters a new line. Or is it just the retraction which you hear?

And ye i know the plate isnt centered. Saw that when it was already halfway. But check especially the last 30 seconds of the video.

Here you see and hear it better. You only hear it when the x-axis is doing short bursts.

Can it be the idle grub screw of the x-axis steppen motor?

RE: Have to be concerned about this clicking noise?

I have tried and failed to eliminate this noise on my printer. AFAIK it does not reduce the quality of its output or cause any other issues, so I've just accepted that it does that as it doesn't bother me much.

The consensus seems to be that it's due to some very minor slack between the extruder gears. When retracting then extruding (or the inverse, in essence when the extruder switches direction), the gears "click" due to the slack as they come into contact.

I once disassembled my extruder to clean it and tried to take this into account when putting it back together (trying to make the gears as reasonably snug together as possible). It did change the noise it made, perhaps even reducing it a bit, but it eventually came back pretty much to the initial sound. So that didn't do it for me, unfortunately.

This may help understand the issue and possibly fix it:

Well the clicking isnt comming from the Extruder. Its comming from the X-Axis steppen motor. Prusa Support said  you have to tighten it, but they said, when x-axis is doing alot left and right bursts, yes you hear this clicking. Its not really anoyying like you said, but i was afraid some gear was comming lose or something 😛

I tried to tighten the x-axis, but it was already tight.

Oh you're right, I didn't notice that it occurred when there are no retractions in your video (e.g. when filling a layer). It does sound pretty much like the noise the extruder makes when the issue I described above occurs, somehow, even though the belt seems to be attached directly to the stepper's axis without additional gears. I'd be interested in hearing about the solution once you find out what causes this.

Well maybe someone else can explain on that. Prusa Support said to tighten that screw, but it was already verry tight. Couldnt make it tighter, and the sound stays the same.

Just wondering if all Mini's doing this (when its going fast left and right on the X-Axis)?

My Mini doesn't make that sound on X axis motion--it does sounds like retraction clicking from the extruder. Weird. It makes me think something is loose; is it from the motor or somewhere else in the X-axis?

Prusa Support says the 2 grub screw in the x-axis which holds that gear in place. Dunno for sure. They said they have to be tight. I cant tighten them more, since they were already tight.

Perhaps disassemble to get the motor out and check. It's going to suck, but if it were my printer that's probably my next step. This is why I used Loctite on mine when I assembled the kit--all the motor pulley grub screws got a dab to ensure they didn't back out.

Perhaps someone on here more expert/experienced than I has a thought? The only issues I've had to tackle so far is getting the Z-axis running smooth, squaring up the printer, and clearing a partial nozzle clog. So I don't consider myself an expert by any stretch.

Ye if some person recalls that clicking noise, and could tell us what it is.

RE: Have to be concerned about this clicking noise?

It really sounds wierd and i would definitly take a look on that and determine what the issue could be. It sounds like the sound of two gears touching teath on changing directions.

Do you have any caliper? If so how accurate is it printing and how tight are your belts? For example a calibratione cube in the size of 20 x 20 x 20, how much is the devation.

When you assembled the X-axis motor, did you leave a gap between pulley and motor as described in step 18 @ https://help.prusa3d.com/en/guide/3-x-axis-extruder-assembly_199519

Did you assemble the pulley in the correct orientation as stated in step 18? (Screw on the flat surface)

I also noticed your modification on the motor to see the roation, could it be that this part is touching the motor and therefore produces this sound?

Hope this helps somewhat!

Watch the Z axis carefully, is this the Z lift when moving to a new position?

Cheerio,

Hi, no this printer is Pre-assembled by Prusa. And yes there is a gap between it. You can look from the right side of the X-axis motor, and there is an hole which you can look through. You see the pulley there with a gap between it like the manual stated. I also checked the movement while it was printing. Seems not comming from there.

And the fancy rotator on the x-axis isnt it also. Its an magnet which sits on top of the shaft-rod. By removing it, it doesnt make any other sound. That would be an easy fix if it was that, but no, that wasnt.

But i found something else out. When i lift printer a little bit on the right side, the clicking noise is gone. Maybe there is some play in the frame?

See video when i lift the prusa.

Ehm, do you by any change have the provided USB stick inserted and the keyring does the sound?

Would have been to easy ;-)!

Mh I guess all the feets are flat on the ground aswell? Could there be something inside the aluminium profile?

It really sounds like metal on metal but that doesnt make sense on the X axis...

Found the culprit. But how to fix it? When i push with my finger against the extruder gear towards me in the video, the clicking is gone.

I opened the extruder part where the gears are. Support told me to push housing towards the bigger gear. The screw goes oppisite direction, and the tiny gear get pushed more towards to bigger extruder gear, with no play between it.

Video of no more clicking. Only the bed bearings need some additional lubrication.
