Cracked smooth PEI sheet with ABS

I followed the instructions to prepare the PEI sheet as described in the manual section 9.3. Unfortunately when I went to bend the PEI sheet after the print the surface cracked down the middle. Now I can't get the ABS prints off the bed without damaging it further. What should I do?

Interesting.

I know that ABS/ASA can be sticky, but when waiting until the PEI sheet is completly cooled down I never had any issues. Most of the time bending the sheet wasn't even necessary.

After the sheet is broken any how, break it until the pieces get loose - I would say.

@herbert Thanks for you answer.

It was fully cooled down when I attempted to remove them.

This is rather frustrating as now I need to order a new sheet.

@abb

I would talk to Prusa Support and if you are lucky they just replace it for you.

There is a chance, that the sheet has been damaged while in production. Ask them.

I would like that, but I suspect it was an issue on my end. I double checked the ABS I was using. It's called Titan X by form futura. I suspect that the anti-warp additives were the root of the issue. Anyway I am using the other side of the sheet and it is printing fine like usual. I should have double checked before printing the modified ABS.

RE: Cracked smooth PEI sheet with ABS

When I first got the MK3S, I got impatient with one of my first ABS prints which did not release and used a metal kitchen implement and pulled off a few patches of the PEI coating.  That was a rough step while climbing the Prusa learning curve.

However, I since learned that letting the sheet and the print cool to room temperature will allow an ABS print to release reliably by gently but assertively flexing it, working around the print at 45 degree angles, both downward and upward.  The PEI coating stays on, reliably, even with quite a bit of force.

If the PEI surface cracked without the use of external tools, I would agree that it's probably defective and that support should be contacted.  I would, however, expect at least one iteration of 'those are consumables' push-back and you may need to be assertive or escalate to a higher level, as in get to the level of someone who does have the authority to replace those.

Thanks for your post.

No I did not use any utensils to pry the pieces off the surface, just flexed it.

One last question, did you let the sheet and the model cool to close to room temperature before trying to remove the print(s)?

@jsw

The print had finished a few hours earlier. So yes the bed was at room temp.

I would most likely say that the PEI coating was defective.  Of course I'm not the one who makes the decision to replace it.  😉

Is it normal that the side strips fall off after a few prints? By that I mean that the sheet has coating on the edges as well and after a few prints they fell off. You can see bare metal along both sides. It's hard to get a picture but the metal is exposed along the entire edge.

In my experience no.

I have two of the smooth sheets, one which has seen very heavy use over the past 6 months or so and nothing has fallen off.
