RE: Can i turn on pi 4 then printer
I have each of my printers on a separate power strip. On each power strip I have connected the printer, the PSU of the Pi and a PSU for my LEDs. You can put a relay (Tasmota/TP-Link/...) before the power strip and control the whole device group with it. Just starting everything with the switch on the power strip also works fine.
RE: Can i turn on pi 4 then printer
So do you turn everything on at the same time because I'd turn the pi on then turn printer on 10 seconds later

RE:
I find it too much of a hassle to turn on devices separately. Are you worried about the Pi supplying 5V to the USB port of the printer? I think there is a delay after switching on the Pi until the USB ports are powered. I have not tested this on a Pi but I have seen it on my FritzBox that a device powered by it turns on a few seconds later than the FritzBox. There are printable jigs or instructions to place a small piece of electrical tape over the pin in the plug to insulate the 5V pin in the USB plug so no power can flow over the cable. I think they were needed/recommended on some Ender3 boards that became powered by a connected Pi even when the printer was powered off. I never saw this happen on my Prusa printers.
RE: Can i turn on pi 4 then printer
You’re correct the Prusa printers are designed to work with standard usb cables and there is no point in blocking the power line.
RE: Can i turn on pi 4 then printer
As long as both are booted up before Octoprint is started then it should not matter.
RE: Can i turn on pi 4 then printer
That's the thin I'm using prusalink anx it boots up nearly instantly thanks for the advice I'll try turning both on

RE: Can i turn on pi 4 then printer
Hi, I do not see a problem in doing it either way. Assuming your printer does have the proper production USB port it should be optically separated from the 5v power, so the printer should not try to turn on using the USB power.
This would be different if using the GPIO pins. Those are connected straight into the power lines, so turning the Pi connected to GPIO pins first would try to power the printer -> bad. Then you would need to turn on the printer first or ideally both at the same time.
RE: Can i turn on pi 4 then printer
OK thanks everyone if I turn pi then printer the printer gets stuck on boot screen with fan on full I believe puts it into bootloader mode ???
Also if you don't mind could you tell me what you temperature of your pi is when it's printing and when it's not as mine seems to get very hot when running prusalink that's with fan and heatsinks

RE: Can i turn on pi 4 then printer
The printer will wait in the bootloader if there's traffic on the serial port. I thought the serial autodetection does not get it stuck so bad. If it resides there for more then half a minute, I should look into that.
RE: Can i turn on pi 4 then printer
During printing my Pi4 is usually at about 60 °C, albeit with OctoPrint. I have it in one of those aluminum Armour-Cases without a fan.
RE: Can i turn on pi 4 then printer
@tojik It gets stuck forever I can leave it for 10 minutes and it is still in bootloader I would much appreciate if you could fix it please
