Prusa Mini Print Surface Shoot Out

Ok, I sort for did this for the MK3S.  I am acquired a number print surafces to test.  We all know the Smooth Stick PEI and Textured from Prusa.  I will test them head to head and do reviews of multiple surfaces that are available for pruchase.

Surfaces:

  1.  TheKIINNGG V4 for the Mini.  It is available on Amazon and eBay.
  2. ULTISTIK Premium Powder Coated.  It is available from Amazon and FilamentOne.
  3. BCZAMD Prusa Mini Double Sided Textured.  It is available on Amazon.
  4. FYSETC Double side Gold Textured PEI.  It is available on AliExpress.
  5.  FYSETC Black Textured PEI.  It is available on Amazon.
  6. Triangle Labs Black Textured PEI.  It is available on AliExpress.
  7. Buildtak.  It is available on Amazon and their website.
  8. Buildtak PEI.  It is available on Amazon or their website.
  9. Chinese made Prusa Mini Smooth PEI.  It is available on AliExpress

I have more but that is a good start.

Any one have any suggested filament to try on them?  Any suggested test prints.  I am going to print some small cylinders and maybe a rectangle with a large surface contact.  Any other surfaces you wanted tested?

You can always try the 500 peg test for adhesion. This is a good test for claims that a particular surface can or can not print small parts without brims, rafts, glue stick or other adhesives. I just created a 1mm diameter X 3mm peg and created 500 instances. The Prusa smooth PEI is a good baseline:

The classical adhesion test looks good, but takes a lot longer to print:

Side-by-side comparison shots of undersides using the Prusa smooth or textured sheet would be useful.

Do you have 500 peg test file?

Prusa slicer, right click, add cylinder, scale to 1x3mm, add instance, type 500 and then arrange auto. If I was at my pc I would do the project for you, unfortunately I’m on a tablet at the moment.

500 was arbitrary. Might as well fill the whole bed. 984 seems to fill it completely.

I've just launched a full bed test. PrusaSlicer is estimating a bit under 2 hours. I like the idea of a full bed test to verify even bed adhesion across the entire surface. A sparser pattern is probably sufficient though. 😀

I should have cleaned the sheet before starting. If nothing else, this is a good demo of why avoiding touching the print area is important after cleaning. Adhesion along the edges where I flex the sheet is definitely an issue. The sheet itself hasn't been cleaned for a week or more.

Nutty would be printing this with a brim!

Ok.  I am about to start.

The tests: 1-60mmx60mm square, 100-3mmx3mmx5mm pegs, and a first layers test.

Scoring:

  • Number of pegs: 100/100
  • First layer quality: 100/100
  • Easy of removal: 100/100

I will clean each bed with soap and water prior to use.  Each surface is brand new.

As a part of each post, I will give you their Live Z and thickness as a comparison.  The filament used will be Silver Prusa PLA.

I've been using the Trianglelabs TXT sheet, I thought I need to clean it with IPA

not soap and water.

at least that's what Prusa told me to do about the smooth PEI sheet.

@sm26

There are conflicting views on this.  I clean it on day one with soap and water and every 2-6 weeks to remove build-up.  This prevents loss of adhesive properties.

RE: Prusa Mini Print Surface Shoot Out

Hey @charles-h13 - I like this 1st layer adhesion torture test. It prints as one easy-to-remove print, but does a good job checking for corner lifting and full-bed adhesion. It's my torture test for bed cleaning since those curves and tight angles tug at the filament. May need to size it up or down for different build sizes.

Suggest grouping the pegs around the edges and corners to test for even coating (a problem on my Prusa textured sheet). Or do it right and fill the whole bed! 😀

I will try it.  I might increase the number of pegs.  I am down with round one but may redo it because the results are too close.

The Prusa TXT sheet failed on the 400 cylinder test - I wake treated by 400 cylinders everywhere and a blob around the hotend.  I will watch the video to determine what happened.
