Semi-convert a MK4s to Core/One?

I have built the core/one and really like the way it prints. I am 80yo and have been lucky in my life- I spend my time designing [Fusion360] and modifying any existing files I can find if they move my projects along. I print only PETG as it has served me will so far, if I need to print with other filament types I am confident the the C/1 will serve me well. I have a MK4s that is not being used and would like to partly convert it to the C/1 bed and printhead but do not feel the need to enclose it as it would only be for PETG. I guess I am looking for someone to advise be as to how good/bad an idea this might be. At this point my Core/one is not enclosed, which makes using it easier IMHO. I should probably buy another C/1 and give the MK4s to some worthy individual [young person]. gene

RE: Semi-convert a MK4s to Core/One?

Hello Gene.  I have an MK4s as well and am considering the C1 upgrade. I purchased the kit to assemble it myself and want to do the same with the upgrade. The enclosure option would maintain a consistent temperature for printing and prevent warping on the print bed, reduce sound and keep dust away. Also, options on the enclosure for venting if you choose materials other than your PETg. Arguably, the enclosure could reduce filament from absorbing moisture while on the spool to a point. What could be better than one C1 is two of them to further your projects along.

I have the MMU3 unit, and will do the MK4S to C1 upgrade with an enclosure. Presently, I am using a very well designed cardboard box as an enclosure. 🙂 This has reduced sound and IMHO increased the print quality as the temperature inside is more consistent than being “open air”. The box is open bottom and two flaps on the top. We are in winter in Canada and a great deal of humidity where I live. I have a print going whenever I am home and spools stored to prevent RH from increasing.

I use a lot of PETg as well, but my wife says she can smell some off gasing at times, so a vented enclosure will make her happy. All these things add up to some $$$.

Lots to learn, a lot to print. My first 3d printer is an MK4s kit. So much fun to put together and happy it works! Take a sip of your beverage every time you say,” I can print…
