Printer starts filament change randomly
MK4S, FW 6.1.3 and now also FW 6.1.4 : the printer starts a filament change and I only can reinsert the filament. There IS NO filament change - so how can this happen? Last night I nearly got mad, with a print job of 5 hours I had to run to the printer 12 times just to reinsert the filament 😨
Any hints are appreciated. Right now I use 0.15 resolution.
We are running 10 of the MK4s in our makerspace, and there we noticed several similar events, but were not able to trace it, because it were different models supplied by our clients.
RE: Printer starts filament change randomly
Is the filament sensor wrongly detecting end of filament? When this occurs it will initiate a filament change in order to load the a new spool.
RE: Printer starts filament change randomly
I found a Solution meanwhile. Forgot to answer here. After tightening the screws in the idler-swivel assembly beyond the recommended position (stronger, tighter) I have made abt 30 prints with no failures.
Could perhaps the firmware detected a slip in the movement of the filament? Just guessing.
The filament sensor works fine, I didn’t assembly the printer itself, just made the upgrade to 4S
RE: Printer starts filament change randomly
I have been having this same issue since upgrading to the "S". Randomly unloads filament during a print... I'm going to try tightening the idler screws.
RE: Printer starts filament change randomly
last night, but with MMU i got same problem, in my case i think the finda sensor go wrong, but with this information i will check the idler
RE: Printer starts filament change randomly
Update: tightening the idler didn't help. I loosened also. I ended up disabling the filament sensor in the settings for now until I can take it apart and examine. It's such a bummer it's only accessible from inside the gear drive.
RE: Printer starts filament change randomly
same here. I ended up disabling filament sensor completely. Looks like design flaw to me
RE: Printer starts filament change randomly
Same for me. Random filament change.
RE: Printer starts filament change randomly
I thought it could be the .6 nozzle, changed back to .4. didn't help. Slowed down print speed, didn't help.
Finally disabled filament sensor and it is working fine for several hours now.

How about cleaning and recalibrating the filament sensor?
RE: Printer starts filament change randomly
The filament is never 100% smooth. It can happen, that for a very short moment the FS really bumps and let the FS thinking the filament run out. If the FW does not check again after let say few seconds the FS status again there can be fals filament run out problem.
The issue can also be caused by the insufficiently tied screws of the extruder idler.
RE: Printer starts filament change randomly
I'll certainly try that solution. Thanks for the advice.
RE: Printer starts filament change randomly
I've done that.
