How to Make My MK4S Quieter?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for advice on how to reduce the noise and vibrations of my MK4S printer. I’ve already tried anti-vibration pads like the Hula ones, and while they help a bit, the printer still shakes a lot, which creates additional noises.

I also considered placing it on a concrete block, but I’m not sure if that would solve the issue completely. I have a regular rubber mat as well, but it doesn’t seem to help much.

I know there’s probably no simple solution to this, but has anyone dealt with a similar issue? Would using an enclosure, like the Prusa enclosure, help with noise and vibrations? Any tips or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I currently have mine sitting on some heavy 1.5" foam with an MDF board on top. Mostly I wanted to reduce the amount of noise transmitted through the bench, and thus floor, it is on. Makes it a bit wobblier when printing but now the rest of the house can't hear it as long as the rooms door is closed 😊

Usually placing a printer on a paver and the paver on the rag such as fluffy towel helps in stopping vibrations going to the surface on which the printer stands on.

Enclosure helps to decrease other noises but will not remove them unless you do a custom one.

Not sure my desk can take a paving slab on it 😂

A simple test:

Temporarily move the printer to a different surface; does the noise change?  Is it still noisy on a concrete or tile floor?

This should help to isolate the issue.

Cheerio,

If you can sit on the desk then it can take a slab. Usually desks must be able to withstand such weight.

I used these https://www.printables.com/model/447434-squash-ball-mk4mk3smk3s-vibration-damper-v40 for my Prusa MK4 and it worked wonders. Made the printer sooo much more quiet. I don't think printing quality even suffered by it. I finally removed them a few weeks ago (after having them there for like 2 years) because the PLA printed parts started to creak against the metal frame. I plan on installing them again soon after either lubricating them or printing them in another material.

Using the structural profiles the MK4 is nearly silent.  I doubt you'll be able to improve it much.

My suggestion is to move it somewhere where you can't hear it.

I don't know if it's because I'm using the enclosure, but it's definitively not nearly silent (although depending on what you compare it to obviously). I find that the enclosure actually increases the noise of the printer, because the enclosure acts as a resonance chamber. I can't recommend squash ball feet enough, the difference was truly night-and-day.
