Bad print quality / layer lines

Hello everyone,

maybe someone could help me with the following problem. I get only mediocre print quality after upgrading to MK4S. Really bad layer lines and small details are not getting printed even "okish" I would say. It could be that the printing quality before the MK4S upgrade was the same as now so the upgrade could be connected to the issue or not. I really noticed the printing quality issue when I compared prints (especially with small details) with a new 3d printer I got.

The printer is running since almost a year with a break over the summer. With the MK4S upgrade I did a complete maintenance of the printer and cleaned everything and re-greased rods, checked the bolts and so on.

I printed the following calibration model: https://www.printables.com/model/1098056-slim-all-in-one-calibration-tolerance-test

(no I'm not checking on the tolerance right now because it mostly comes down to the bad wall quality)

The prints on the MK4S where done with the following profiles: 0.2mm SPEED , generic PLA and Prusa MK4S HF0.4 nozzle (PrusaSlicer 2.9.0 RC1, classic (not arachne) mode)

The prints on the comparison 3d printer where done the following profiles: 0.2 default profile and generic PLA  (slicer which came for the printer)

I used the SAME filament on both prints (did them right after each other)

To illustrate my issue I let you take a look at the following images:

Detail images MK4S Print

Detail images comparison 3d printer

One of the inserts of the model in direct comparison

As you easily can see even something is wrong with my MK4S (at least I hope so I can fix it)

Afterwards I printed a normal calibration cube on the MK4S which doesn't look great either:

Maybe some of the bad quality comes from the filament but I used it for both printers and it should at least differ not so much imo. Any guesses? I'm kind of lost right now because I think I did all I could hardware wise.

Regards Sebastian

RE: Bad print quality / layer lines

Hey, I've built an MK4S kit recently and had similar issues with the print quality with generic PLA profile, what fixed the issue for me was changing the extrusion multiplier to 0.94. Hope it helps.

It's like you're using fuzzy skin with that comparison. Obviously not, but that's about how bad it feels.

The obvious check -- make sure your nozzle is secure. Doubt this would be an issue, as it would likely present itself as a more catastrophic failure, but it could potentially explain the extrusion variance.

What temperature did you use for the MK4S print? I could see those results being caused by printing too hot, or without adequate part cooling -- excess stringing, and blobbing are the signs there.

If you're actually printing with a "reasonable" temperature, then I'd check to see if your thermistor is reading correctly, as well as double-checking the tightness of the grub screws on your heater block for both the thermistor and the heater cartridge.
