Filament change mid-print has 2nd purge as soon as it starts moving to resume print

When have to change/reload the filament mid-print whether planned or not, it purges as normal and I pull off the purged filament. This also happens if I pause the print. As soon as it starts to resume print, it spits out about an inch/3cm of filament while travelling which then gets integrated into the print. I also noticed the XL doing this as well.  Is there a setting in Prusa Slicer causing the issue that I am not seeing? If anyone else has had this issue, have you found a solution or workaround?

this second purge is design intent, to pressurise the nozzle for the ongoing print process.

when the initial purge occurs, simply hols the waste material with tweezers or long nosed pliers, and the second purge will remain attached to the waste that you are holding, as the nozzle moves back to the model being printed

Interestingly, I was testing out a couple of things for github on the new 6.4.0-alpha firmware on my MK4S. One of the things I was testing was the new functionality of turning off the part fan during filament changes. That works, but I noticed that the extra pressure prime wasn't happening and the color change purge often fell off the nozzle before returning to the part. I ended up with a couple ooze extrusions on the test cube I was printing.

Joan, thank you for the education. I am a complete newbie and thrust into this because the Printing guy had to take early retirement and they needed someone fast. I knew zero before starting in July. It's been challenging and I am grateful for the assistance.

It makes sense. I have since applied that technique to and it has been hit or miss. Unfortunately if it breaks when first purged, it seems to be a game to see who is quicker...you or the print head. So far when this happened it's been the print head about 5 wins to my 1.

I do think it would be good if the print head stayed in place a second so it gives a little more time to try to get a hold of it before it races off. You know, for those of us that are slower and have less than stellar hand eye coordination. 🙂

Sembazuru, I don't need to shut off the fan...I seem to have a knack for making that happen with the fan running. LOL

You'll like the fan turning off. It makes managing the color change purge easier because the free-air extrusion is easier to grab because it isn't being blown all over the place.

My point is the 3cm/1in extrusion after confirming that the filament color is good is no longer happening in the current alpha. I just submitted a bug report to ask if that was intentional or a regression. So, the behavior may or may not change by the time 6.4.0 final is available.
