RE: Print control software

I have been using Octoprint running on a Raspberry Pi for years and am very happy with it. I've never printed any other way.

Yes. You use a USB cable to go from the Rpi to the printer. OctoPrint has a web interface. There is also an excellent Android app that I use. It is called OctoApp. I think there also is an Apple version.

RE:

From what I have read on the OctoPrint user forum you can run it on Windows, but you need to have a PC or VM running the whole time. And you should not tax that PC or VM too much to avoid negative effects on print quality or even a crash, which are less common nowadays, but still.
The recommended way is to run it on a dedicated Raspberry Pi, at least a Pi Zero 2 W or a Pi 3.

When I wrote this I was not sure what you meant. There is the OctoPrint host (which can be run on Windows) and there is the OctoPrint Web interface. The web interface works on any browser and any OS.

I think the recommended way is best as long as you are comfortable maintaining a Raspberry Pi. I use the web interface from my Windows PC, or the Android app that I mentioned from my phone.

If you do not have one yet and have ethernet access available where your printer is, get a Pi 3 or better, because of the ethernet socket and the sturdier USB sockets. Ethernet is so much better and easier to set up than WiFi. You do not have to worry about interference with ethernet. The WiFi on the Pis can get a bit wonky sometimes.

RE:

The Pi 3 is fine. I upgraded to a Pi 4 a while ago. I agree with @walter-layher that you should use ethernet if you have it. If you don't, I think you will still be okay. I can recommend some cases that I've been very happy with. They keep the Pi (3 or 4) very cool without a fan. They are only $10.
