Pre-nozzle cleaning nozzle bed touch
This post is essentially a build plate quality concern. Im not entirely sure why the nozzle presses down on the bed right before the cleaning, but now I have two "dented" build plates because of it. Also, the first print on the MK4, a temperature tower, caused the center of the build plate to "bulge". Im not sure what all the little specs are in the PEI but to me it looks like bubbles. Don't have this on any of my other PEI build plates. Anyone else have this?

Further data and discussion on this for those interested. Those first 2 presses push hard enough to actually push the sheet and bed down on the corner. This can't be good over time even if you consider the sheet itself consumable.

Anyone contacted Prusa about this?
The plate is considered a consumable item, so not covered by any warranty, hence doubt much will be done, but it's an annoyance nonetheless.....does it affect printing over that area?

The plate is considered a consumable item, so not covered by any warranty, hence doubt much will be done, but it's an annoyance nonetheless.....does it affect printing over that area?

Maybe there needs to be a setting to adjust the pressure during that procedure?
Dont care if the bed is a consumable, dont want marks in it.

I wish I had an update for you. The two attempts I made ended up being a miss because I cant just sit around and wait for support 😀

I felt a bit interrogated and the word consumable was thrown at me. I was pretty triggered by that. Here is the chat - I will have to continue this tomorrow though because I don't save prints and I need to show them that these bed deformations show up on prints. Gunna do a nice 0.15 layer height full bed single layer print tomorrow. Should be fun.

I don’t own a MK4 but, for what I understand, the problem seems to be that the first time the nozzle pokes the bed in order to get a rough estimation of the Z offset, it travels fast enough to mark the smooth plates. Fine tuning of the Z offset is done around the printing area, poking the bed in a much gentler way and that doesn’t marks the plate.
If this is so, a pretty easy fix in the firmware would be to home the Z axis at the top, instead of down at the plate. The extruder goes all way up until it reaches max Z and when the Z steppers feel the hard stop, the printer knows that it’s at Z220, just like homing the X and Y axes.
From Z 220 it can go very fast down until, its a few mm. from the bed and relocate to the printing area to make the cleaning and the final Z offset auto adjustments.

100 ways to skin a cat. We don't know why they chose this. There may be a reason they use this single spot everytime, like load cell location. I would agree with you though. If they can do this (and the nozzle cleaning) outside of the print area, it would be most ideal.

My guess though, something tells me if I were to measure out the X and Y locations and compare it to the mini, it might be the same.

You may be on to something there. Just eyeballing it, I think that spot would be in the typical purge area on a Mini. Makes no sense since the Mini doesn't have a Nextruder but they clearly weren't very thorough when prepping the Mini's firmware to work on the MK4. I saw in a serial log where there was a label still calling the MK4 a Mini in the firmware. So they could have copy&pasted some starting location and failed to update it for the MK4
My guess though, something tells me if I were to measure out the X and Y locations and compare it to the mini, it might be the same.

Yeah, I think there are too many similarities to the way a mini operates (just based on other users responses and feedback) to discount any theories that Prusa just pushed MK4 out the door with a half baked Mini firmware.

Also, the same issue was asked about twice in Angus' MK4 stream today, among other issues. Prusa should really step up and pay attention to users on this release.

I'm not convinced this second agent has ever seen an MK4 in action. He's making statements about the process as if it were an MK3 or Mini, not something with a load cell and it's variation on the startup process.

I agree. Also seemed weird they didn't know how the menu system worked on the MK4 or didn't know the MK4 was (and maybe still is) shipping without the manual. I have a feeling this is just a waste of time and Prusa won't be taking responsibility for anything. Can't say I'm not trying though, someone's gotta do it.
