Globby first layers since 5.0.0 update

Really odd issue that started a week after upgrading to 5.0.0 GA/stable:

The printhead/extruder seems to be over-extruding, occasionally, causing intermittent globs of filament goo on my print bed, which catch on the next layer and make the print fail.

I've been looking around the forums seeking answers/fellow sufferers, and it seeeeeems like there might a z-home / z=0 retention issue, perhaps?  I've also seen mention of excessive nozzle drooling can cause the z offset / bed sensor to register z incorrectly.

I've made sure to clean the nozzle, clean the bed between prints, power off and z-home the printhead between prints, etc etc, but I'm at a loss of what else to do.

Here's a few shots of different jobs and the globby mess of the not-so "always perfect first layer, every time" that I've been experiencing.

Okay, I gave up trying to troubleshoot this and reinstalled 4.7.2 firmware and switched back to non-IS configuration.

The issue went away and I'm having (slower) quality prints again, without any fuss.

RE:

Okay, I saw someone else mention that they powered off their printer, then ran an Auto Home first thing before printing, and this appears to be working so far.

I'm suspicious of Z retaining its home value between prints?

My first layer looks to be completely intact, but I'll not hold my breath for my entire print job.  Fingers crossed, though!
