Embarrassingly slow file transfer speeds (WiFi prusa link or connect)

So I finally got my MK4 kit and built it all. The quality of the printer itself seems really great and the build of the MK4 vs the MK3S+ seems significantly improved.

However, the Wi-Fi transfer speeds I'm getting are abysmal - I've checked on the router side of things to see if there was any packet loss or oddities in routing but it doesn't appear so. Have I just got a bad board? We are talking about a 38Mb file taking upwards of 30 minutes to transfer (it feels like I'm back in the '90s with a dial-up 56K modem! 0k slight exaggeration it is actually more like 156Kbps)

I'm really hoping it's just a bad board and a quick swap out by Prusa will fix the issue, if it's a common issue - then the question becomes why would it ever be released in such an unfinished and embarrassing state that lets down the entire build 🙁

I’ve only transferred a few files via Prusa connect - and it was ok. That said, now I have octoprint working with my Mk4, I do all my transfers through that.

I'll ask Prusa support if its a bad board then - if so I'll swap it out. Thanks!

After a really frustrating experience with support, I was told both "It's working as described and not a defect" and "It's a known issue with slow speeds". Apparently the wifi module is working as described and the defect is link/connect.  The advice was "just use USB" 🙁

According to the new live video, the final input shaper version will be available on Friday or early next week.

There should be language support and a much faster network. Let's see.

I tried it once as proof of concept but found I could run a memory stick between my printer and computer probably 100 times before the file was loaded to the printer via network. That was that. I'm not entirely sure when you would ever use this feature as incredibly fast as it is...

Only 100 times?  LOL.   But you're right, the slow speed of the wifi adapter basically makes it useless -- sneakernet is better.  Ethernet is mostly usable, but still painfully slow compared to other local ethernet transfers (i.e., Octoprint for example).

Aside from the embarrassingly slow transfer rate, the WiFi bootup after power on also takes a good long time - 5ish minutes some times.

I guess the problem is coming from the "connect"-server.

Uploading from my network goes as fast as everything goes on my network.

Downloading from the connect-server to the printer is so slow......

Also, when using PrusaLink, transfers from my computer to the MK4 are normal speed for my network.

Using prusalink, Wi-Fi response is fast doing monitoring.  The problem is the file transfer speed internally in the hardware.  File transfer is slow, but also based on file size.  Small files are a few seconds.

You can do a prusalink file transfer while the printer is running.  You do not need to wait until printer is idle.  USB transfer requires printer to be idle.   On one hand transfer may be slow, but on the other hand you can transfer files without stopping the printer.   99% of my transfers are done with prusalink.

RE:

Don't know if already mentioned anywhere here, but here's the catch.

The MK4 uses an ESP8266 or also known as ESP-01S. This module tops out at 300-500kb/s depending on the implementation.
Those modules support 802.11 b/g/n but doesn't run at those speeds.

As far as my understanding goes this thing won't be any faster.

Hi guys, as the slow WiF is the most criticized drawback of MK4. Devs working hard on a smart solution to be faster then ever. I can not say more than what was mentioned in the Prusa Live/Podcast, but you will be surprised.

Data point. I had an ~100MB sliced model. Using Ethernet it took about 6.5 minutes to transfer. That's just a bit better than 2 Mbit/s. On a Gigabit ethernet net. Moving data around is not something the new board is good at.

When someone asks you if you're a god, you say, "YES!"

Just installed new v6.x firmware and wifi transfer got terribly slow to MK4! Dowgrading to last v5.x fw made it back faster.

Any solution?

Thank you

Same here.
I thought that only LAN may be the solution.
Well, it was not, LAN also is very slow, as slow as WIFI before updating to 6.0

...so Prusa, com'on : we need a solution. Can't be that before fw 6.0 LAN and Wi-Fi were acceptable and now not at all!
