Do not load Firmware 5.0.0!

I have always known to NEVER load an upgrade that has a number of n.0.0 and yet I did!  5.0.0 prints fine only if using 100% fill, but ANY infill does not print.  The infill prints ABOVE the base level, so it just balls the filament up in a nest.

I just loaded "MK4_firmware_4.7.2.bbf" to the USB stick, but my MK4 does not downgrade when i restart it.  How do i accomplish this?  Please help.

RE:

5.0.0 works with no issues on my machine.

But if you want to downgrade:

Push the reset-button, immediately followed by double-pressing the selector-knob.

On the new screen, confirm the update by selecting the "FLASH" button and pressing the knob.

I have to agree here, but not for the same reason. Since v5.0.0 firmware the Prusa Mk4 we have homes above the build plate and is unable to home down to the build plate. The Z-axis self test also fails. With the latest 4.x we had no issue.

It also works great on my MK4.

Sorry for my poor English. I try to do my best.

Thank you!  That worked perfectly.

RE:

I had some odd "homing" behavior the FIRST time my MK4 homed after loading 5.0.0, but it has worked perfectly on subsequent homing and all prints.  I just assumed all that extra "bashing and buzzing" during the first homing was 5.0.0 doing some initial data gathering / calibration, as it has worked fine since.

The difference in experiences with 5.0.0, ranging from "works perfectly" and "fails completely", is mind boggling.  Some area of the firmware must be SUPER sensitive to some minor difference related to assembly, adjustment, or part variations.

Yea definitely has some issues.  Default .2mm Speed settings for PETG fail as soon as it gets to infill.  It just keeps making a birds nest.   Also, it hasn't been able to connect to Prusa Connect for the most part too since this firmware update.  Thinking about reverting back since it seems like a lot of people are having the same issues.

Thanks to GV above, I easily loaded 4.7.2 and all is working great again.  I think that with it working so well, it falls into the update category of "If it ain't broke, don't "fix" it".

Yes, I also think that this is the point, in general for all firmware on the MK4.

After updating to 5.0.0 the first print started with (as the display said) recalibration of X and Y axis. That was no fun, was not sure if I should turn of the printer before something falls off.
I did not, and all prints since then work very well for me (knocking on wood).

Can you describe this further?  Do you mean the object comes loose from bed (i.e., like leveling is wrong)?  Or that it is okay for first solid layers, but infill is too high and not sticking to previous layer?   Does the location or size of the object matter?

I had not yet tried the "0.2 speed" PETG profile with 5.0.0, but just printed (2) test objects and they printed fine (grid infill, 15%).  But my test objects might be very different from the objects that you had trouble with, so I don't want to say "it works for me" without testing something similar.

Getting the bird's nest on ours too, but seems to be happening at a certain time/place on the bed. I've successfully printed about 4 fast prints today that only took up the middle of the bed.  The prints where I had either the length or width filled, those ones failed.  Flashed it back and will try again.  Not pleased as it created quite a mess both times.

Yeah, I also panicked and turned off the printer quickly. They need to tell people if that is normal or not. And is there any way I can repeat the bashing if it's required? 😅

Hm, may be sprinkeling some sand on the rods may help with that ?  😋

RE: Do not load Firmware 5.0.0!

Prusa Software seems to have taken a quality nose dive in the last year. When they were maintaining their own forks of Marlin and Slic3r they were pretty amazing, but now they have Printables.com and variants of the firmware for MK3, SL1, Mini, XL, MK4. They still have PrusaSlicer, but have added PrusaLink and PrusaConnect. The last 2 are billed as "features" for the printer but are still rightly marked as a "beta" capability.

Anyway, the software/firmware team seems to be spread a little thin. This is a classic problem with growing software baselines.

PrusaLink works very well on my MK4, but every few prints I have to hit "Reset" or it fusses over the X axis - sometimes saying it could not calibrate but prints anyway!  As I said before, I downgraded to 4.7.2 and all is well again with "Jolene II".  I named my MK3 "Jolene" because i spent so much time with it that my wife called it "The other woman".  I smiled and told her "You just named my printer - Jolene" (from Dolly Parton's song)!  So I named my MK4 "Jolene II" and it is well named.

I’m not sure about this warning. 5.o.0 has been fine for me so far.

I would love to upgrade (?) to 5.0.0 but am spooked by the horror stories. It would be nice to know of the percentage of people who have no trouble with it.

It’s hard to believe that there’s this much trouble with a “stable” release.

RE: Do not load Firmware 5.0.0!

to give some positive feedback too 🙂

i also hesitated, but than updated to 5.0.0 too.

After reboot it took a couple (10-12) of "jamms" until everything was calibrated. But since the display informs you that it gets noisy that was ok.

luckily no troubles since than. Just the normal 2 Taps on the axes before printing.

( on every FW change, on my printer,  i got a different noise when doing the purge-line 🙂

Like someone said above, it would be interesting to figure out what the differences are, (normal tapping printers vs "jammers")

could it be the way the printers are placed. (normal feet, table or concret slab or soft feet (squash balls etc etc.)
