Can't get dowels to not be inside the part (e.g. separate objects to arrange)

I split a model with the cut tool to print without supports and added connectors, after I do the cut the dowels show in the list of objects in the scene, but they are not movable off the model (they are like the plugs option). Everything in the docs seems to imply they will be sitting there on the print bed as separate objects to print. It is totally possible I am just being a moron, but I cannot see how this works like it says it should? The last image below is showing them still inside the part (the connector object is listed in the parts list on the right, but I can't select that and arrange like a normal part would?)

OK, apparently you need to do it with feeling.  It is finally working, no idea what made it work, other than posting that it wasn't... grrr... Software is supposed to be deterministic! Well anyway, printing is happening.

I ran into this and the problem seems to arise if you place any connectors as plugs and then click the dowel option. The dowel option has to be selected before any connectors are placed.
