Print issues - After 1 month of ownership

So... My mk4 has been a bleasing! its worked from day one, except for some hickups with selftest, which got cleared, the printer has been delivering smooth good looking stable prints.

My printer has 5days 14hours and gone through 345m filament, and now its starting to show! 🙁

I print PETG mainly, and did only one PLA print on the printer with the supplied galaxy black pla. Other than that its running prusament PETG all the time.

But now im seeing underextrusion, overextrusion on top layers, bad seem lines and starts, ghosting and very small layer shifts. ITS A LOT! and im not sure why all of the sudden it started with all these problems.

I know the images show PLA vs PETG print, and to be fair, the PLA prints is on my MK3s+ which is running 6month old now and ~1km filament

Yes, what will certainly happen one month into ownership, particularly if spools of filament are left exposed to room air, is that the filaments will absorb moisture.

I daresay a good percentage of print quality issues reported here are due to damp filament.

My first thought too, especially for PETG, which is more prone to absorbing moisture from the air than PLA.

As stated earlier, i print mainly in PETG, and also use a dryer.

My conditions in the prints room is 28 degrees and 15% moist. I get that if rolls are left out, they can absorb, however this is out of the bag after being used before, dried and used.

But something i just noticed was after an update of settings in prucaslicer my custom profile has been altered and set up with speeds that are way off ranging from 20mm/s to 120mm/s which i never run. So maybe thats the issue. Im printing right now to test 🙂

"Dry your filament" is the new "adjust your live Z".

I'm with OP. I run prints on the MK4 and get less than satisfactory results. I move everything (including my "sopping wet filament") to the MK3S+ and it prints perfectly. Or at least I get what I expect. Not a non-uniform top layer (what is this, an Ender??) and other defects. But I am not ready to say it's all on the MK4. I think it's a combination of a profile that needs tweaking, the new hardware, and firmware in its infancy.

And I still ruin prints due to the blob of death left behind during a color swap. It should be as easy or easier to do than it is on the MK3S. Not more challenging.

I bought a pack of 5 PETG filament from Prusa. The orange was amazing out of the box, but when i started printing with the urban grey one, it was a disaster. Stringing, weird printing issues, holes everywhere like it was shotgunned from the side. After drying 12 hours , all the issues were gone. So yes, you might need to dry the filament, especially PETG.

And 'Adjust your live Z' is the new 'Clean your plate and clean it my way!'  😉

To be fair, places like Reddit r/prusa3d are full of posts from people who ask why their print doesn’t stick, and pictures showing obviously mis-adjusted first layer height and/or shockingly dirty (to me) build plates.

It doesn’t take long following that subreddit to realize why “check live-z” or “clean plate” are go-to answers, and potentially overused. The overuse stems from how often they are correct though.
