MMU3 availability for Mk4

For those wondering, I just enquired of Prusa as to when the MMU3 upgrade for the Mk4 will be available to order.

The MMU3 or the MMU3 upgrade will not be available until August given current supply issues with the cables for the Mk4 board.

That's realy bad. I do not do very much with the MMU2 but now and then I do print high detailed parts where I need special support material (polysupport). It had been nice if prusa made the MK4 backwards compatible so that I could use the MMU2. But maybe this is a kind of business model. Unfortunatelly I cannot sell my MK3 until the MMU3 is available.

RE:

If you read the recent Blog post ( https://blog.prusa3d.com/prusa-summer-update-mk4-xl-mmu3-assembly-kits-and-more_79420/ ) you will see that the MMU3 for MK3S+ is scheduled to ship at the end of June all being well.  The MMU2 to MMU3 upgrade kits will be available for order in July, and finally the MMU3 for MK4 to start shipping in August.   As for if there will be separate upgrades from the MMU2 for the MK3S+ or the MK4 this has yet to be revealed.   So to recap:

MMU3 for MK3S+ = End of June

MMU2 to MMU3 upgrade = In July

MMU3 for MK4 = In August

All dates are approximate and may be subject to change.

On the basis that the MMU cables to the printer board are different for the Mk4  I assume this will mean different upgrades for Mk3 variants and Mk4.

Prusa support advised me recently that they are having supply issues with the MMU3 cables for the Mk4 which may also be contributing to current delays.

I think I heard (at the MakerFaire?) that the main board will be the same but there should be some additional electronic part (maybe something akin to the Nextruder LoveBoard)? Might be something like a converter from MK4 cabling to MK3 compatible, but thats just a guess on my side.

RE:

The MMU2S to MMU3 upgrade comes with Improved electronics.

That means it comes with a new controller board.

A new board May not be supplied, Rene,

Improvements are not necessarily replacements.

In that case what then is the definition of Improved electronics.

And how is someone with a mmu2 board going to make these improvements to their controller board.

Will you get a bag of smd parts to up date the old board.

I don't think that is performable by the average user.

So to the woman then :-), what is Improved electronics.

New firmware to run electronics, is by definition, improving electronics.

Not that I have any idea what Prusa means but we're talking semantics here.

You could be so right.

But besides the firmware update, there is also the improved electronics.

See

So I'm very curious what that should be then, other than a new controller board.

The future will tell I guess.

The MMU2 - MMU3 upgrade is about 99€; The controller board of the MMU2 is about 54€. So if the controller board is the same and you need to print all plastic parts - what will be the value of the 99€?? Or, if the board and the interface is the same why is there no simpe firmwar for the MMU2 to the MK4? Improved electronics can only mean a new controller board - everything else would be bullshitting of the customers.

I asked Prusa this question a few weeks back. New board is not included, but there will be some additional hardware.

Their reply:

"The control board is the same, however there's an additional little board plugged in the ports of the power and signal cables that's to avoid the problem of miscommunication between the cables, which sometimes were causing power issues".

This therefore means "improved electronics".

Coming from the camera repair industry I've hard-wired many sub-pcb's to fix a design flaw in the original circuit. Minolta was infamous for using this kludge.
