What's the plan for the GPIO board?

Let's hope it will not become the "Smart Box" 2.0, in case anyone still remembers that one from 2 years ago! 🙂

@jp-guitars, If you are asking me, I have no idea what I will do with the GPIO board. But who knows what I (or someone else) might come up with in the future. It won't be the only little electronics board sitting in inventory here.

As to the GPIO board: I would be a bit cautious to buy stuff that has not been proven to work as promised/advertised and let these things mature a bit first. I still cannot control the HEPA filter and the light strip in the Prusa Enclosure in the way that was promised/advertised when I bought them over one year ago. Promised was controlling them via the famed Smart Box. Currently I can turn them on and off, but that is about it. I have the same functionality now with other solutions: a Nevermore Mini for the filter, that one has even more functionality than the Prusa Enclosure filter (HEPA and Carbon filtering with sensor control), controllable LED strips and additional fans, Camera and TimeLapses via Raspberry Pi and OctoPrint. So I already have much if not all of the functionality of this GPIO board.

It's up to you. As I understand from what little they have, it's just a bunch of GPIO pins that are controlled by G-code. Got a light or fan you want to turn on or off? Connect it (probably via a transistor and/or relay) to one of the pins, add custom G-code in the slicer at the appropriate point, and when the printer reaches that G-code it'll send a message to the GPIO board to turn that pin on or off.

I got all excited and ordered the upgrade, the accelerometer, and the GPIO board. Shipping was only $14. A steal.

Same. I'm not sure I'll use the accelerometer, but I'd wanted to put RGBW light strips in my enclosure, and having the GPIO board will mean I can easily tell the micro that's running the light strip to turn the lights on/off/change color/etc.

The upgrade includes "Nextruder parts (including PCCF printed parts)". Wich parts exactly? Are they compatible with a Nextruder modified for MMU3?

I went through the MK4S assembly manual and printable parts that are now available.  The idler parts and mainplate for the Nextruder is upgraded to PC-CF parts.   The MMU3 changes are still used, even superior in my opinion.  The new fan assembly will work with the MMU3 parts on the nextruder.

Will there be MMU3 profiles for the High Flow nozzle right away?

The wifi card is updated.  Range  I think.  NFC antennae is the othe part.

Observation; it looks like a metal frame for fan.  Bolted on the area of the heat sink.  Will this add to the heat sink cooling ability?  Probably minor.

I ordered the MK4S upgrade with the announcement.

Necessary for my usecase: no

Having fun upgrading the printer: yes

After writing this pro/contra list it was a close decision... 🙂

I also went ahead and ordered the upgrade, just because I want the latest and greatest :). Looking at some of the reviews/articles I believe the speed increase is only due to the higher layer option 0.25 versus 0.20. I also checked this in PrusaSlicer and can confirm that at the same layer height of 0.20, the time to print is the same when using either of the 0.4mm nozzles (regular vs HF).

RE: MK4s announced , will everyone get the $99 upgrade?

I was intrigued when I saw the Prusa release video, but I have to be honest,  Robert Cowan's video sealed the deal for me.  Improved overhang performance will make a noticeable difference in the way I'm able to design parts, and improve their function and appearance.  I use my printer nearly entirely for small functional parts at home, and occasional larger parts designed for work needs.I print only once or twice a week at most, but when I do I value dimensional accuracy and consistency.  I've been very happy with the stock Mk4, and things will only improve with these updates/upgrades in design.  Despite not having any actual problems with my printer, I've pondered trying out the 'improved' designs for the cooling fan that try to address the asymmetric cooling of the stock setup.  I kept putting it off because it wasn't critical, and now that I can get these parts straight from Prusa with updated profiles and higher flow nozzle, I'm happy to.

I feel like the Prusa philosophy has been under some heavy scrutiny over the last year or two, and those who have banked on Prusa's 'long view' will continue to see the benefits of that choice while those who went other directions will start to feel their printers age more acutely.  It's hard to brag about dimensional accuracy and repeatability when the alternatives offer more in trendy tech.  However, when I've designed and printed precise jigs for work and find that parts slip in with perfectly consistent friction across the entire built plate (with a bare minimum of iterations required in design), and then see the side by side print quality on more challenging prints against the more 'techy' competition, it only makes me more appreciative for Prusa for providing such an option.  Granted, I'm probably less price sensitive than some, but I am quite waste sensitive, and as such failed prints would pretty quickly turn me off of 3d printing entirely.  Having a company like Prusa in this current throw-away economy is really nice.  It reminds me of the Concept2 rowing machine.  A really solid, industry standard product, widely used and trusted, with unbelievable long term support and upgrade paths for older product at reasonable prices.  This kind of product looks pretty dull against the competition that offers sleek looking frames and fancy interfaces, but meanwhile, how many of the rowing teams at the Olympics this year train on those other rowers, probably almost none.  They all use the trusty Concept2 because function is ultimately more important than form when it comes to tools.

I wanted a for my MK4 a proper camera integration and a less directional cooling. They offer the better cooling. Speed increase is not my priority, neither is skipping the slicer.

Camera support would have made it a no-brainer for me but now I think I will wait a while and hear you good people's experiences.

Despite the Hotend preheat error #13202 (MK4) error after only 1.5 days of use (which I haven't fixed yet) ... I ordered the upgrade.  It will be the last item from Prusa I buy if I have any more issues with such a short life-cycle on the printer.  Bamboo calling.

RE: MK4s announced , will everyone get the $99 upgrade?

Robert Cowan (who's video helped my decision to order this upgrade last week) has now posted a follow up video explaining that the overhang performance was primarily due to a slicer glitch in both Bambu Slicer and Orca have.  This issue originally existed in Prusa Slicer, and although it's been available for months, hadn't yet been implemented by Bambu or Orca.  The issue has to do with the slicer incorrectly considering overhanging walls as bridges, printing them at bridging speed rather than the slower overhang speed set in the slicer.  When bridging speed is slowed down to the same 10mm/s that overhangs are set at, print quality is as good or better (at least with the generic PLA used).

Not sure if this will influence any decisions for those who haven't yet ordered the Mk4S upgrade, but since it was an influential video for me, I thought I'd mention it here.

Hello, in my opinion this upgrade is only hardware fix of original design. There were problems with cooling right side of parts and overhangs from the beginning. The new design of hotend fan may be solution but: The weight of extruder is increased. The change of nozle will not be confortable as now. On printables is design of fan-shroud ( https://www.printables.com/cs/model/621536-improved-mk4-fan-duct) which resolves problems with cooling (Im using it and have no problems with overhangs). I think that this "upgrade" is waste of money.

RE: MK4s announced , will everyone get the $99 upgrade?

I ordered the upgrade and then cancelled the order. Why?

- I get good enough cooling in most cases using one of the fan shroud adaptors from printables. The new fan and shroud might be better still, but they block view of the nozzle (useful for checking the first layer), and make it harder to change the nozzle.

- The CHT nozzle increases the flow rate, but it sounds from Thomas Sanladerer's review that this is mostly useful for getting higher speed with thicker layers rather than increasing the speed at 0.2mm and below; most of what I print uses thinner layers. ( , around the 2 minute mark.)

- NFC and the App are not useful to me.

I might revisit this in a while, but for now I'd rather spend my goofing-off budget on other things.

RE:

Have you resolved the 13202 yet?  I had the same issue pop up in early August (after almost a year of use).  Waiting on a new buddy board to hopefully fix it.  Curious if and how you finally resolved it.

Im sure I read somewhere the extruder weight is the same as before due to the light weight of the fan

The announcement page says this about weight:
"The new fan may look bulkier than the old one, but the weight of the Nextruder remains virtually unchanged."

Make what you will of that, but grammatically speaking "virtually unchanged" is not the same as "unchanged".   I would bet it is a little heavier, because the fan is larger, but maybe not enough to matter.  At least that is how I interpret Prusa's "virtually unchanged" verbiage.
