MK4 Current Owners - Issues? [POLL]

There seem to be some common issues with the MK4. Just wondered how widespread these issues were - so if you have a MK4 already (assembled version of course) please do vote in the poll upon whether you have any of the reported issues!

Wonder if these are actual printer issues, or assembly issues with a lack of quality control……

Have any issues been reported? I see nothing here. Not sure you have to vote to see the results. As i don't have an MK4 I'm not voting.

Got my order in pretty early, and have ~12 days of actual time printing in so far. Only issues I've encountered have been self-induced (pushing speeds too high, mostly). I've seen that thread and read the other issues here in the forum, so I'm trying to be very nit-picky about operation and prints coming out. Maybe good luck or maybe I don't have enough time on the printer yet, but, so far, so good here.

I just found out the hot end doesn't go to 300c like advertised. It only goes to 290c. Hope they fix this since CF-PA6 really needs higher temps. I print it at 305c on my other printers.

I had to send my MK4 back because I had extreme vibrations that were heard especially during the first layer. It sounded like a saw.I thought it was the bearings at first, but it wasn't. I suspect that this noise is caused by the planetary gear.

That's one guy who's making all kinds of crazy claims.  He says he's built a relationship with Prusa insiders over the past decade and they are all feeding him internal information that he is sharing on reddit.  He also says that many employees are unhappy and they are counting on him to get the word out 🤣😂

I'm on two weeks of ownership.  Aside from the slow wifi transfer speeds (which are supposed to be fixed with todays firmware) I'm super happy with it.  It's been a pleasure so far 🙂

Actually it's very easy to build relationships when you have a business contract and the turnover is low.  I've worked with some of the same people at Prusa for almost a decade and they're great people.  As the company has grown from a startup to 850 people, the culture has changed some and there are "factions" internally.  That happens at every organization at some point.

I don't share anything regarding their business fleet printer (NDA) or anything that would damage them.  I only shared the issues impacting the MK4 and Input Shaping because they weren't getting internal prioritization and our business contacts were being forced into bad positions to speak out the wrong side of their mouth.  Once aired and escalated to our escalation team, they gathered a team of developers, designers, and techs to problem solve the issues and create fixes.  That was the goal and that was the result.  No need to be salty.

No rattling issues, or nozzle hitting the bed and marking?

There is a YouTube Short that I saw yesterday showing the rattling issue that you experienced. The user pressed his finger against the extruded motor (where the planetary gears are located) and the rattling stopped while he had his finger there. Could the noise therefore be coming from this area on the printer you had also?

Silky smooth so far.  About 45 prints in.  Textured sheet since I'm mostly PETG printing.  Little spot on the sheet where it does the initial probe but I don't think it's anything more than a visible blemish from filament.  Doesn't feel indented.

The printer has been an absolute pleasure thus far.  The automatic first layer alone makes the entire upgrade worthwhile.  I printed a little 20mm cube yesterday while testing an air filter I designed (automatically comes on when the printer is active) and out of curiosity I measured the cube...it's was like 19.96 all around.  Was pretty impressed considering I've done nothing but take it out of the box and start using it.

Sounds very promising - yes its the auto bed levelling that tempted me to purchase as well, although I enjoy the build so went for the kit.....

my mk3s was a kit and I really enjoyed the build as well.  I'd have done the same for the MK4 if the kits were available on launch day.

RE:

I only put up one video and it wasn't that one and I only posted it once a week ago, but nice try being a jerk.

No, we touched every possible part, screw, bolt, tension, etc and the planetary gears themselves weren't making the noise.  It was a tolerance issue between the toolhead carriage, it's bearing mounts, and the planetary gear slippage.

So could be a hardware issue that can’t be fixed with a firmware update……

RE: MK4 Current Owners - Issues? [POLL]

I don't understand the hate you're apparently getting for this. Prusa printers (most 3D printers) are not an appliance, they are an open sourced device that naturally appeals to makers, tinkerers, designers, etc. and often problems use crowd sourced solutions. Posting what support has responded with is helpful to know in troubleshooting. Perhaps someone who has a similar issue now doesn't need to waste the time of support to try the things your reported, and it may work in their case.

Knowing that Prusa thinks there is possibly a design flaw is also good. Personally I prefer when a company owns their problems, and a design flaw will likely mean a small (mm) change in the printed parts that will now be included in kits, and potentially sent out to customers. I personally would have rather you posted to here and then mirrored it on Reddit because Reddit threads don't typically flow chronologically... but they do allow for expansion on portions of the topic.

Eventually 3D printers will be an appliance where service trucks are able to repair your refrigerator by printing the part needed rather than ordering one. Right now, they are for us tinkerers and someone being cranky about crowd sourcing solutions when Prusa themselves fully support and love the crowd/open sourced environment is absurd.

RE: MK4 Current Owners - Issues? [POLL]

While not "hate", I don't really believe "Jeremy" on a lot of the claims. Most especially his claim that 50% of units have some large defect that need attention. If it were anywhere near that high, we'd see a LOOOOT more complaining here, reddit, youtube, and in the few 3d printing discords I'm on. So far, in total, I know of 4 people having similar issues to Jeremy in total, and that is out of several dozen (probably, honestly, over 125+) different users in different areas.

As the quote goes, "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence". Other than the video, which is evidence of the issue, Jeremy hasn't posted any evidence to back up the statements they said are being made from Prusa. Prusa themselves have not stated anything, either. And no, finally posting the packaging and shipping doc doesn't count, since that's standard documentation that Prusa always publishes (in fact, this is slower than it normally is). And yeah, we know input shaper is a long way off - Prusa has said that over and over again, it's not like it's some Super Secret information that only Jeremy knows (and, further, Jeremy didn't provide any real information about it anyway, just reframed what has already been stated).

So, if Jeremy has proof of the 50% claim, or any of the other claims, then, they simply need to provide them. It's really that simple. That'll clear any "hate" real quick. As it stands, it comes across as one disgruntled person making a lot of noise in numerous places over an issue, and making specific and unsupported, unproved claims. I feel bad Jeremy is having an issue with the MK4 they have - that sucks, I'd be disappointed as well. Hopefully they can find resolution to that, and also a healthier path to what, from the outside, looks like attention seeking behavior.
