How much space is actually needed?

Hello,

I'm currently toying with getting a 3d printer and came across the Prusa MK4. But before I buy the printer, I wanted to ask how much space it actually needs to stand firmly. I have a space in my office in mind but it's only 42cm (16.5 inches) deep. Would the printer be able to sit there comfortably? Width and height is no problem and having the display hang over the edge is no problem either. I know the official specificaction says 50cm x 55cm x 40cm, but is this also the space it needs to stand on?

Photo of the location:

Thanks in advance!

Front-to-back, the mk4 "feet" are roughly 13".  It also needs about 5.5" behind the back foot to prevent the bed cable from "crashing" into the wall.

That puts the surface depth needed at about 18.5" from the wall.  Your 16.5" surface would likely work only if you move it out about 2" away from the wall.

Another alternative might be to extend your surface by placing a 18.5" long board on top of your cabinet -- letting it overhang the front of the cabinet -- and placing the printer on that.  But if doing that, you might want to attach the board with screws or adhesive for stability.

Thank you very much! I will screw a larger platform on top of it then.

Any feedback on the width required please?

Contemplating a new cabinet which has plenty of depth but is 36cm in width - will the feet sit on it?

Will have space around the cabinet for the printer to overhang, so thats not an issue, it’s just making sure the feet are firmly on the top……

Should be good. Widest feed are less than 11 in (28 cm) apart.

If the picture is where you're going to place the printer, you have plenty of space if you put it side ways and not front to back of the cabinet.

This is what I would do - put it sideways on.
